Chaosium announced it will be reissuing the ElfQuest RPG in all its glory. Look for it coming to Kickstarter for the game’s 40th anniversary.

ElfQuest is a name that calls to mind a whole other world. One of possibility, of expression and exploration across all sorts of norms. ElfQuest was, and remains, and astoundingly progressive comic, featuring nontraditional gender roles, sexuality expressed joyously between characters, acceptance of love of all types, polyamory, familial love, friendship, and all of this wasn’t even the focus of the story. They were just elements that mattered to the characters. And all this despite being in the late 70s-early 80s, when a relationship with reversed gender roles might be played for a laugh but never anything more.

All that to say, ElfQuest was the right blend of joyous and sex-positive and adventure-y—it was one of the first big “indie comic” successes, and went on to spawn a whole bunch of other projects, including a tabletop roleplaying game from Chaosium. A roleplaying game that will soon be reissued in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Chaosium Brings Back the ElfQuest RPG for 40th Anniversary

The original ElfQuest RPG was designed and written by Sandy Petersen, of Call of Cthulhu fame, as well as Steve Perrin and Yurek Chodak. Full of artwork from ElfQuest co-creator Wendy Pini, whose distinctive style set the whole tone for ElfQuest, the RPG was a hit.

Now, Chaosium is getting ready to bring the gameback, reissuing the project under the title ElfQuest Classic. Led by Chaosium President Rick Meints, the book will hit Kickstarter soon, with a Kickstarter to bring the book back in the original boxed set format with all sorts of goodies. As Meints said in a blog post:

For years ElfQuest fans have asked us to bring the game back into print. Based on all we’ve learned from our previous Classic projects we are ready to add ElfQuest Classic as the next in this series. We all look forward to revisiting, rediscovering, and further exploring the Pinis’ World of Two Moons.

ElfQuest co-creator Richard Pini added that the game has “from its inception been about the value and strength of family and tribe”. She also points out that a roleplaying game is an incredible way to bring people together.

Look for the Kickstarter coming in October 2024. Along with the boxed set, Chaosium has said it plans to bring “back to life” all of its original 1984 ElfQuest publications. So get ready to return to ElfQuest once again!
