Night City beckons once again as Netflix and CD Projekt RED tease a new Cyberpunk anime set in the world of R. Talsorian’s hit RPG.

Two years ago, Cyberpunk Edgerunners came out of absolutely nowhere and astounded pretty much everyone. Set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, which itself is based on the world crafted by Mike Pondsmith for R. Talsorian’s hit cyberpunk RPG, titled fittingly enough Cyberpunk, Edgerunners did so many things for the Cyberpunk franchise.

It breathed new life into a video game series that had had one of the rockiest launches in recent memory. Edgerunners was so good it singlehandedly saved Cyberpunk 2077 from investor problems and chicanery. It gave people new context for the world of the Cyberpunk RPG.

But more than any of that, it was an amazing anime. Just one of the best. It’s only 10 episodes, and it will absolutely break your heart.

And now, it seems, we’re getting even more.

Cyberpunk + Netflix + CD Projekt RED Teaming Up Again To Punch Your Feelings Out Of Your Eyes

And in true CD Projekt RED fashion, there are precious few details available now, though I’m sure there will be plenty of little things hinted at in the 20-second teaser that will become extremely relevant before long. But here’s a look at the trailer in full:

“Return to Night City. More info coming soon.”

And that’s all we get. Just some flowy cyberspace-y graphics. However, if you look closely, they do kind of resemble depictions of the Blackwall, which in the RPG is a massive firewall developed and maintained by Netwatch to try and keep rogue AIs from breaching into the city’s infrastructure.

And if it’s AIs returning to Night City, it could be a sad time for citizens. But, it usually is in Night City.

Regardless, it seems unlikely that we’ll see the same set of characters from the original Edgerunners series by Studio Trigger, which is honestly good. That story has been told. And it is definitely over. There are a few unresolved threads that could maybe be picked up – I wouldn’t mind knowing more about Lucy or seeing Falco show up again – but it feels like this is going to be something else.

In the meantime, we’ll look for more information. It’s probably time to go rewatch Edgerunners.

See you in Night City, chooms!
