Goatboy here with the must-haves for playing a Warhammer 40K tournament. Don’t leave home without them!

While you can say your must-have for any tournament is an army, your rules, and the missions; there are a bunch of other things that help you play your game. These can be just little fun things, tools to get you going, and awesome doo-dads that make life easier for you.  I know 40K 10th Edition is somewhat simplified but it is still a complicated ball of interactions you need to efficiently control to get your games done on time, your score calculated correctly, and a good time had by all.

5. Measuring Devices

There are a ton of options for this beyond just a tape measure.  I know I have used special pieces that have locked in measurements to help determine charges, deep strikes, and other fun options during a game.  Having these things at your fingertips is a big help and lets you quickly build out your turn, ensure your opponent agrees you can do your moves, and lets you crush the enemy into an avalanche of dice and destruction.

4. Objective Markers

I am a big fan of the push of Neoprene objectives.  If you see me playing, I am most likely going to have some kind of custom one I made for myself based on my art.  I like to use them as they easily remove any “argument” of, is a unit in range.  If you can touch the neoprene, you are good, and that is a great way to ensure no arguments.  We can’t always be on the same page for charge distances at times, but at the very least we know if someone “controls” or “contests” and objective.

3. Wound Counter Dials

I have used these pretty extensively in my games as I usually run some kind of dumb big monsters on the tabletop.  It helps to have an easy to read dial that lets my opponent know where my creature is at health-wise and lets me know how many wounds I have left.  I have used a bunch of different ones and like a localish company that shows up at events, is extremely friendly, and has great stuff called Rexer’s Lasers

2. Easy to Read Dice

I will say this when you are playing with dice that are not just numbers or pips make sure you explain to your opponent what is a 6.  I always start my game showing my Khorne Dice and how the 6 is a giant gold Khorne symbol while all the other ones are pips of skulls.  They are bright red and white, easy to read, and just make the game easier to play.  Any other dice I use are wound counters and are set up to just make this game easy for me to play and you to understand what is going on as my opponent.

1. Markers For Your Separate Units

I always make sure I have some kind of marking to showcase my different units.  My current World Eaters army is full of the same unit 3 times and they all kinda look the same.  Red, gold, and weird flesh mixed with giant swords.  It can be hard to tell each unit apart and I have started to use Squad Marks that I have painted in different colors to help me make sure I don’t mess up.  Heck a lot of the time I am just trying to play in a way to make as few mistakes as I can so ensuring I know what unit is what is important.

I know I like to have my dice separated out in my dice tray for ease of use.  What other fun things do players need to have to help them out?  I never got a laser pointer but I think it is about time to go grab one next time I am an FLG Event.
