The latest edition of White Dwarf has rules for team and free-for-all games for 40k and these Deployment Zones look interesting!

Warhammer: 40,000 10th edition is in full swing and GW is looking to keep the ball rolling. In White Dwarf 506 they are reintroducing multiplayer missions. While this concept is far from new the missions themselves morph the 2v2 competitive rules into something new. There are six missions total and we’re got a teaser of some of the rules from WarCom.

“The main attraction is the new Cauldron of War rules and missions, morphing the competitive 2v2 rules you know and love into a variety of free-for-all and team-based games for up to six players. Whether you and three mates want to smash your armies together and see who comes out rosy, or form a glorious xenos coalition to face off against the Imperium in a furious 2v2 or 3v3 clash, there’s something for you.”

From the teaser we can see three of the mission deployment zone. One of the nice things about these setups is that GW is attempting to prevent one player from getting completely dog-piled on turn 1, specifically for the three player game. Those setups can be difficult to balance as one player can end up getting sandwiched by the other two players.

Personally, I think this is a fun and useful update to the game. There’s been loads of times when I am looking for a game and there’s an odd number of players waiting for games. It stinks if someone has to sit out as people pair off. Team games and multiplayer games are a good fix for that situation.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for multiplayer games I suggest the Ocatrius Campaign. It was between the Orks and Tyranids (primarily) but there were still loads of Imperial assets caught in the middle. In fact, the Imperial assets were the ones that pushed this conflict into happening. Later on, there’s also some Chaos and Aeldari elements in play, too.

The point is that these multi-sided conflicts happen in 40k lore all the time. So there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to do some fun multiplayer games for 40k. With the upcoming rules in White Dwarf 506, now you can if you’re willing to give them a go!

Ever try multiplayer Combat Patrol games? Just tossing that out there…
