Horus Heresy: The Dark Mechanicum Are Getting More Units For Legions Imperialis
Games Workshop is showing off even more units coming to Legions Imperialis for the Dark Mechanicum. Here come the evil robot overlords!
In case you missed the announcement, the Dark Mechanicum is coming to Legions Imperialis first. Not only will they be able to use the same units as the new Mechanicum Battleforce, but they are also getting unique units all their own.
The new Serperos ‘Overlord’ Heavy Stalker revealed during Warhammer Day
Today, we got a look at even more units the Dark Mechanicum is bringing to the Horus Heresy Era. If you like spindly war-walker types then these are definitely for you!
Unlike the Taghmata, the Dark Mechanicum prefers to build unique constructs referred to in official records as Silica Mutus. Unlike battle-automata, the Silica Mutus have individual intelligence, rudimentary and animalistic when operating solo, but they adapt with frightening speed when several patterns are grouped together, creating a dynamic gestalt that can assimilate knowledge outside its initial parameters.
The Dark Mechanicum Rises
First up, we have the Tennebrax ‘Archer’ and the Errax ‘Butcher’ who both lean into their names. The Archer is the ranged version while the Butcher is the melee option. They are both build from the same basic construct but obviously fill different roles. I do wonder if these are paired together as some sort of combo kit. They have some similarities but also have quite a few different bits.
Next up, we have the Harpax ‘Swarmer’ Scout Hst. These “mobile cyber-drones” scout ahead and use their “exo-planar repeaters” or “harpax lascutters” to tear into the enemy. Honestly, they remind me of Tyranid Ripper Swarms, but mechanical. That’s both terrifying and intriguing.
Dark Mechanicum Rules Preview
Not only did GW drop some hints at the new units, we also got a look at a few of the new rules for them as well. You’ll be able to find their full rules in the Rise of the Dark Mechanicum book coming soon. For now, check these out.
These rules are teasing some interesting bonuses for playing as the Dark Mechanicum. Units with Noosphere Controllers seem to be the lynch pin for their army as they provide some unique benefits and can trigger additional bonuses. It reminds me of the Synapse rules for Tyranids in a way. This whole concept of interconnected network intelligence could be a very interesting way to handle the Dark Mechanicum on the tabletop! I’m looking forward to learning more about them and the regular Mechanicum in the days to come.
Again, don’t forget that the Dark Mechanicum can also field regular Mechanicum Taghmata units. So if you want to get a jump start on your Dark Mechanicum forces, keep an eye out for the upcoming Mechanicum Battle Group.
