Games Workshop has teased a new campaign for Magma City and it looks spicy. Gather your gaming group for an epic campaign.

Things are about to heat up with the release of the Dark Mechanicum for Legions Imperialis. There’s a new Rise of the Dark Mechanicum expansion book coming with loads of rules and formations. But also within those pages are rules for a new Escalation Campaign that leads up to a Grand Clash siege of Magma City!

Escalation To Grand Clash

Escalation Campaigns follow a familiar format – teams of players battle over several mission cycles, each one two or three games long, with more intricate Flashpoint Missions between them and a glorious Grand Clash at the end. Where these campaigns differ is that each cycle has a steadily increasing points limit, growing from a humble force into a mighty legion over the course of gruelling battles.

Personally, I’ve always like the concept of Escalation Campaigns or leagues. What I find most challenging about them has been the execution. They seem to start strong, meander in the middle, and then everyone forgets about the epic conclusion. To me, that’s the real tragedy of these types of “events” — unless you find a group that’s willing to power through. Then they can be really rewarding and memorable campaigns.

That said, this seems relatively short. I think that could be a good way to encourage players to stick it out. The mission cycles only last two or three missions, followed with the Flashpoints, and then leading up to the Grand Clash. I think the trick here would just to keep the pace up. But that really depends on the players in your group and the amount of commitment/effort they want to put in. I could see this being done over a couple of weeks on up to a couple months — just depends on how you want to structure it for your players.

The Grand Clash is the ultimate goal in my mind. Giving everyone time to assemble forces worth of such an epic battle is what this is all about. I hope if you DO end up running or playing something like this you make a day of this Grand Clash. It’s going to be one players are going to talk about for years to come.

The Fall of Magma City is an epic, multi-stage battle that tasks the traitorous team with expanding their beachhead into three separate Conquest Areas, while loyalist forces try to stem the unending tide. And we mean unending – attacking forces that fall in battle can be returned to the field so long as enough of them are waiting in the wings to group up.

The idea of resolute defenders holding out on an unending tide of attackers is always an inspiring one. Will the attackers be able to crack the defenses in time? Or will the defenders be able to hold them off until relief comes. That’s a story we’ve seen play out time and time again in history. And now you’ll get to write your own chapter in the Horus Heresy with the Siege of Magma City!

There’s also a bunch of new formations to try out with this book like the one above. So gather your force and your friends and prepare for a Grand Clash of epic proportions.

Do you have a group that would be interested in running an Escalation Campaign for Legions Imperialis?
