Monster of the Week, one of the most popular RPGs this side of the Coast, has an exciting new BackerKit campaign for two incredible books.

When it comes to games Powered by the Apocalypse and the myriad genres, styles, and stories that fall under the RPGs potent engine, a few names keep floating to the top of the charts. And Monster of the Week is one of those lofty few. And it’s not hard to see why.

The game takes inspiration from one of the more beloved genres of TV/movies – the Monster of the Week serial. These are shows like Buffy and Supernatural or The X-Files and Psi Factor. Each week sees your party find a different monster with a different weakness and all new storytelling options. You might have seen the game in action in The Adventure Zone’s Amnesty season (one of my personal favorites).

Or maybe you’ve played it yourself and experienced the thrill of hunting monsters with your close friends. Either way, publishers Evil Hat are back with a new BackerKit campaign for two books: The Slayer’s Survival Kit and The Hunter’s Journal.

Monster of the Week: Slayer’s Survival Kit & Hunter’s Journal

But what’s in each of the books? Starting with the Slayer’s Survival Kit, you’ve got an amazing new player expansion book. With nine new playbooks and nine new team playbooks, there are a ton of new options, including:

  • The Action Scientist
  • The Celebrity
  • The Changeling
  • The Covenant
  • The Envoy
  • The Forged
  • The Host
  • The Interface
  • The Visitor

Each one of these suggests its own story and special moves to accompany it. And then you’ve got your new team playbooks, which give your whole squad a set of new levers to play with as well. But that’s just the groundwork. The Slayer’s Survival Kit tackles new Weird moves, assets, allies, and guidelines for Big Magic. If players get to use it, this book has opinions about it.

And the Hunter’s Journal adds even more to the game. Top of the list is a guide to “extend and enhance” every single playbook that Evil Hat has ever published for Monster of the Week, including the nine new playbooks introduced in the BackerKit campaign.

It’s also an incredibly helpful guide for Keepers, who can use the Hunter Story mechanic to help personalize stories, including advice for tailoring to the playbooks specifically, as well as having, as you might hope, a ton of new monsters to play around with.

You can get both books as part of the BackerKit campaign, but that’s not all on offer. There’s also a set of premium dice, zinc alloy “Hunter’s Coin” tokens to help keep track of your Hold, a premium casebook for keeping track of your individual cases, and more. You can find it all at the link below.

And good luck out there, you’ll proBably need it!
