This one is for the lore junkies out there because the Ironhead Squats are finally revealing how they survived the Squats on Necromunda.

Over the weekend I had pointed out how The Ironhead Squat Prospectors are keeping the old school Squat army alive. I’ve often wondered just how they managed to hide and survive on Necromunda for so long. Well, now we’re about to find out with some official lore coming soon from Games Workshop.

via Warhammer Community

“They’re the first faction not of the six great houses to receive a full expansion book in the form of The Halls of the Ancients, a 128-page hardback book encompassing the definitive story of and rules for the Ironhead Squat Prospectors on Necromunda.”

Ironhead Squat Prospectors Lore Confirmed

This book is the first time we’re getting a “House of…” style supplement that explores the history of a non-house faction. And it’s focusing on one of the greatest mysteries on Necromunda — at least for lore junkies. I really can’t wait to get my hands on this book to figure out what the heck happened to the Squats! And I think we might finally get some answers.

“This House of… level release explores their origins on Necromunda – how the Confederation of Urlish first travelled here, how the Great Charter was negotiated, and why they still remain 10 millennia later.”

As a part of the House of… style books this one will naturally have all the stuff you could ever need to run this gang in Necromunda. That means all the rules with updated weapon lists, wargear lists, all their available fighters and vehicles, exotic beasts, and of course all their unique hangers-on and characters.

Yes, that includes the new Trikes!

There’s also new rules for Squat Ancestry for further customization based on their OG Mining Clan. And even new scenarios themed around the Squats themselves. Oh and the new Ironhead Squat Accessory pack is ALSO coming out with even more options, too.

And this is ALL good stuff. I’m looking forward to it and I’m excited for fans of this gang to get some love. However, I know the majority of players probably don’t care quite as much. But what just about every 40k and Necromunda player of a certain vintage will care about is the history that’s about to be dropped on us.

The Squat Legacy

A few years back I wrote up a piece that was a brief overview of why people still cared about the Squats after all those years. This was before the Leagues of Votann were announced and we literally had two Squat Characters in Necromunda — and that was basically it. “Where did the Squats go” was a big question after the army was removed from 40k basically after 3rd Edition came out. That’s where the term “Squatted” came from in reference for when something gets removed from a Warhammer game. But the flame for this army never really died out.

For all those years we didn’t really get a lore reason why the Squats went away. And, if you read the article, you’ll know why “Tyranids ate them” wasn’t the actual answer, too. While the return of the Leagues of Votann did help clear up a TON of questions, their arrival didn’t answer the questions that I’ve had all this time about the Squats on Necromunda: So…where did they come from and how did they survive?

We’re finally going to get some more answers thanks to this release. I’m looking forward to learning about the history of the Ironhead Squat Prospectors. They might be the most direct descendants from the Old School Squat army.

We’ll get some answers…and probably more questions, too!
