Voltron is coming soon to a tabletop near you, thanks to a new RPG in the works from Catalyst Game Labs, Kickstarting next week!

Voltron, the legendary defender of the universe, the giant robot made up of individual giant lion robots, the only thing standing between the fiends of the universe and you, is getting a tabletop RPG, which is exciting news for a whole subset of folks. Whether you’re a fan of the old 1985 era Voltron, which was a whole generation’s introduction to anime, alongside Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon, or the new Voltron, which was also pretty cool, you’ll find both in an upcoming RPG from Catalyst Game labs.

Voltron RPG Coming To Kickstarter October 8th

Now, I know the first thing to come up when I think about a Voltron RPG is how the system will handle the many mechs combined into one. Will it be that every player contributes something? Are there individual actions? Who does what, and how does the GM handle those cool multi-splitscreen cockpit banter moments where everyone is already in Voltron mode, and they’re still having witty banter?

We know a little bit already—some months back, Catalyst Game Labs announced that their RPG division was working on a “Dice Core” system, which it describes as a “medium-weight roleplaying system that is fast-moving, easy to learn, and provides mechanics to reward (or punish) player’s choices.” But we haven’t seen the system in action yet, so I can’t tell you what that translates to in terms of specifics.

But fast-moving is what a Voltron system would have to be to try and capture the essence of a show. It’ll have to have a solid set of rules for when you’re being just a pilot in the world, running around doing stuff, for when you’re taking down threats in a Lion all by yourself, and when you’re all combined as Voltron. Ideally, there’d be a way to make some kind of Voltron-esque figure.

All you need is a bunch of robots that combine into a bigger robot – but that can be surprisingly hard to manage. You can learn more on October 8th, when the Kickstarter goes live, though, so be sure and check it out!

Knowing my luck, I’d probably be the left foot. Objectively the worst position.
