Warhammer: Underworlds – GW’s ‘How To Get Started’ Tips
With the new edition of Warhammer: Underworlds around the corner Games Workshop has some tips on how you can jump in.
Today we’ve got some info from GW on how they recommend you get started with Warhammer: Underworlds and the new edition. First up, we need to talk about Embergard.
Tip #1 – Embergard Is Here For The Long Haul
It’s important to note that Embergard will be the core set for the entire edition of the game – while there will be a regular supply of new warbands and new decks, there will not be new-season boxed sets as in previous years.
To me, that means if you really want to engage with Warhammer Underworlds as a new player or a returning one, you probably need to pick up Embergard. The good news is that it’s going to be here the whole edition so don’t worry about those “Seasonal” boxed sets that were used last go around. It’s just this box for the new edition — with more warbands and Rivals decks on the way.
Tip #2 – All 58 Warbands Will Have Rules* At Launch
We covered this already but all 58 warbands will have rules for the game at launch. *The difference is what will be in rotation for Competitive play. Here’s the quote from GW:
All 58 warbands from the current edition of the game will be getting updated rules – that’s warscroll cards and fighter cards. Sixteen of these will get physical cards which accompany the recently revealed Grand Alliance boxes, and the rest you can download at launch for free. You can pair them all with any of the four Rivals decks from Embergard, and any future Rivals deck release, so you can be playing with your friends in minutes.
So if you have any of the previous warbands you’ll be able to play in the new edition with those models and the free rules. The catch is not all of them are part of Competitive play events.
Tip #3 – Any Warband, Any Rivals Deck
If you want to skip the deck building and just jump into playing then just grab your warband and grab a Rivals deck. If you’re curious about Nemesis mode and how deckbuilding works for that, we covered that also.
Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget To Experiment With The Rivals Decks
This one isn’t an official GW tip but rather one I’m tossing in there. GW does say to play with any warband and any Rivals deck — but I wanted to double down on that. The new edition has labeled the play styles of the different warbands: Strike, Take and Hold, Mastery, and Flex. They have also done the same thing with the Rivals decks. However, I think the really interesting thing about this is what happens when you mix one type of warband with a different type of Rivals deck.
I think that depending on the warbands and Rivals decks you might just come across a real power house playstyle — but you won’t know that unless you experiment!

Our best advice: Snag Embergard if you’re interested in playing Warhammer: Underworlds!
