WizKids announced a new D&D map-building board game, Edge of the Realms – Fields of Faerun. Here’s what we know.

WizKids unveiled a new map-making board game. Titled Dungeons & Dragons: Edge of the Realms – Fields of Faerun, this game will have players making maps, going on quests, and rearranging the Realms. The new game is designed by Phil Walker-Harding, creator of Sushi Go! and Imhotep.

Which is pretty exciting considering the premise. Players will build a map of the Realms that they then stry and complete Quests with. But as the game goes on, you trade cards—and your quest may become another’s. Let’s take a look!

D&D: Edge of the Realms – Fields of Faerun

Edge of the Realms is a card-drafting, quest-completing game of exploration and quests. You can really feel the Sushi Go! DNA at work here. Each player draws their own map cards and places them facedown. Everyone reveals simultaneously what they’re playing on their maps – and then you pass your hand to the next player.

“Every adventure needs a good map! You are explorers in the Forgotten Realms. Reveal new terrain and magical places to prepare your adventurer’s journey. But think fast! The game speeds along quickly as everyone plays at the same time.

Match up terrain, activate landmarks, visit cities, and fulfill quests. After 15 turns, you’ll have a completed map, ready for adventure! The player with the most points will be crowned the greatest explorer in the Edge of the Realms!”

The thing I love about games like this—going off of my experience with Sushi Go!, for instance, is how quick you play. The game is fast-paced. Everyone playing simultaneously means that there’s never really any slumps. There’s no downtime between turns. You’re passing to the next player and looking at whatever garbage they’ve handed you.

Until someone hands you exactly what you need to complete a quest. Then all bets are off and you’re once again a tactical genius.

As you can see, there are many ways of scoring. Many paths to completing quests and the sweet victory that comes with it. You can take Edge of the Realms for a spin yourself sometime next year. But, as always with these things, you can pre-order today.

Happy adventuring!
