Bored? D&D Board Games For When You’re Bored Of D&D
From rebranded classics to entirely new games that feel like D&D with different rules, there are a ton of D&D board games out there.
The ven diagram of people who enjoy Dungeons and Dragons vs people who enjoy board games is pretty close to a circle. There’s just a good chance that if nerdy cooperative (or competitive!) games-to-play-around-a-table-with-your-friends is your thing, you’ll like it in many different forms. And for those people, there are quite a few options for D&D-themed board games.
1. D&D Monopoly
Monopoly is one of the most divisive games out there. I’ve seen entire family dinners ended early when a ‘fun’ game of Monopoly got a little too competitive. So if the game hasn’t been banned in your house like it has mine, this Dungeons & Dragons-themed edition may be a lot of fun. It’s branded especially after the hit movie, Honor Among Thieves, and comes with all of the little extras you expect from Monopoly editions such as unique tokens and cards.
2. Betrayal at Baldur’s Gate
The Betrayal series of games are very fun and very unique. Your party spends the first half of the game building your location—in this case the city of Baldur’s Gate. And then eventually something happens and it turns into a cooperative game where the party is fighting for their lives. The last time I played, a dragon attacked the city. And with dozens of scenarios and ways to construct the city, you almost can’t play the same game twice. This- and its horror counterpart- are honestly some of my favorite board games of all time.
3. Tyrants of the Underdark
This time we’re playing a competitive game. Tyrants of the Underdark has you play as a house of Drow; recruiting monsters, cultists and demons to help you take over territories of the Underdark. At the end whoever controls the most territory wins. This is more of a strategy game, and sometimes a hidden strategy can change the course of the entire day.
4. D&D Clue
Another classic with a fantasy spin. This is the same murder mystery game Clue that we all know and love. Who’s been replaced by the secret devil? What weapon did they use? And where did they hide the secret infernal puzzle box? Y’know, Clue… Only you can play as a Tiefling.
5. Wrath of Ashardalon
Sometimes D&D themed board games don’t feel a ton like Dungeons and Dragons outside of the branding… And sometimes they’re cooperative games where your party has to enter monster-filled caves and go on quests. Honestly, this is D&D in a different format and that never doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to me. This is also a game with lots of different scenarios, so you can play it over and over again.
