A short new video preview of the upcoming Dungeon Master’s Guide purports to be about encounters. But they don’t really talk about them.

You won’t find much in the way of a discussion about Encounters in a new video preview of the Dungeon Master’s Guide, titled ‘Encounters’. But what you will find is Todd Kenreck and James Wyatt talking at some length about the different sample adventures you can find.

If you were hoping to get a glimpse of some of the encounter design tools, this may not be the video for you. But, with five different sample adventures in the DMG, this video does show off a ton.

At press time, it was still titled Encounters, but that may change! Hopefully there’s still a preview of the encounter tools to come. So keep an eye out. In the meantime, on to the adventures.

D&D’s New Dungeon Master’s Guide has Five Sample Adventures

See? Encounters. But I suppose if you stretch the definition out – an adventure is a series of encounters. But don’t let a title error get in your way. There are some pretty sweet adventure examples in the Dungeon Master’s Guide.

And this video gives us a look at them. Starting with The Fouled Stream, a 1st level adventure that feels as absolutely 1st-level adventure as it gets: an alien fungus in a cave has fouled a stream. Now, there are monsters, and you have to do something about it.

Next, there are Miner Difficulties for 2nd Level Characters. This adventure is all about some dangers in a mine. Without spoiling too much, the players head into a mine in search of a Hook Horror. But with a bit of luck, they might find friendship instead.

For 3rd level characters, there’s The Winged God, which is my personal favorite of the lot. It features kobolds, kobolds, and more kobolds. Kobold bandits, kobold supplicants, kobold warriors, winged kobolds, and it all comes to a head in a showdown with a dragon. Classic stuff in only about half a page, which is pretty impressive.

Horns of the Beast is for Level 5 characters and is very set in the world of Greyhawk. Featuring evil cultists, an attack by Sahuagin raiders, and a forgotten temple in a distant jungle, this feels like an adventure straight out of 1st Edition.

Finally, Boreal Ball, pictured above, is an adventure for 7th level characters that features Minsc and Boo, at least in the art. They aren’t necessarily included in the ball unless you want them to be, in which case, feel free.

At any rate, this is your preview of the adventures that await in the new Dungeon Master’s Guide due out next week!

Happy adventuring!
