Fans of ‘Everdell’ Will Love the New ‘Wondrous Creatures’
You are an admirer of wondrous creatures who seeks to form the world’s leading creature reserve, with over 100 different creatures to capture!
Like most of you are too, I’m sure, I’m a big fan of Everdell. It’s got a little bit of everything. Some worker placement, some engine building, some resource management, plus cute cuddly critters. If those things all sound good to you too, you might want to read more about Wonder Creatures.
Wondrous Creatures Overview
Wondrous Creatures is a new competitive worker placement game with some engine building mechanics. Players are all exploring an island full of mysterious and wondrous creatures. As they explore, they’ll gain resources, find and hatch eggs, and gain achievements to honor their, well, achievements.
Each player will place their workers on the map, gaining some combination of resources, eggs, or creatures. When gaining resources, the resource tracker is moved up that much. Simple.
When gaining eggs, they’re placed along the track at the top of the player board. Eggs can also gain bonuses for resources, or points, or other fun goodies. But eggs can also be used to gain achievements, which we’ll get to in a bit.
Gotta Catch ’em All!
When gaining creatures, the creature card is put into the player’s hand. By spending resources, they can put the creature into the reserve. These creatures each have unique bonuses, and there are over 100 of them!
Like Everdell, some creatures have instant abilities, some have triggered abilities, and some have passive abilities. Ultimately, it’s up to the player to decide which creatures to go for, which will drive a big part of how they will score points. However, players score major points through achievements.
By collecting various combinations of creatures, players can gain achievements. This will grant the player major points, but also new abilities. Either their unique captain ability, or from additional bonuses of the achievement itself.
Once all players have claimed their achievements, the game ends and players count up their points. Whoever has t he most points wins!
Wondrous Creatures is definitely heavily inspired by Everdell, mechanically speaking. But it adds a bunch of new mechanics and systems which are sure to delight a more euro-centric player.
If you’re looking for a game that has a huge variety of strategy and replayability, with a fun combination of worker placement and resource management, you should definitely check out Wondrous Creatures.
