As the monstrously successful (pun intended) crowdfunding campaign comes to a close, Monster of the Week is about to expand in a big way.

Monster of the Week is one of the most popular RPGs in the Powered-By-The-Apocalypse framework. It resonates within the psyche. And it’s not hard to see why: the whole system is built around emulating the titular genre.

Whether you’re playing high school slayers, a family of monster hunters, agents in the “unexplained case files” department at a secret agency, or whatever else you can dream up, Monster of the Week offers players a lot of flexibility. And with two new books: the Slayer’s Survival Kit and Hunter’s Journal, the game is about to get a lot bigger.

Monster of the Week: Slayer’s Survival Kit and Hunter’s Journal – Crowdfunding Ends Soon

There are two books in the crowdfunding campaign. First is a player’s expansion, the Slayer’s Survival Kit. This book contains nine new playbooks (which are sort of like loose character classes) as well as playbooks for your whole team.

But that’s just the groundwork. The Slayer’s Survival Kit tackles new Weird moves, assets, allies, and guidelines for Big Magic. If players get to use it, this book has opinions about it.

The next book, the Hunter’s Journal is a sort of catchall book for Players and GMs. It has advice for creating your own stories . On top of that, there are new monsters, and new rules for keeping the narrative moving. If you want to shake up your games of Monster of the Week, these books bring a “sweeps week” vibe.

Which I mention because the game takes inspiration from one of the more beloved genres of TV/movies. The Monster of the Week serial. These are shows like Buffy and Supernatural or The X-Files and Psi Factor. Each week sees your party find a different monster with a different weakness and all new storytelling options. You might have seen the game in action in The Adventure Zone’s Amnesty season (one of my personal favorites).
