Games Workshop: Five Games We Want Brought Back

Games Workshop might be best known for Warhammer but there’s more to their catalogue than the Grimdark. Here’s a few blasts from the past!

When it comes to making games that’s what GW used to be known for. Especially in the 80’s and 90’s. While you can make the case that 40k put them on the map it took a bit to get there. And once they became the GW monolith, they have experimented with quite a few other games. Here’s a few we would like to see Games Workshop bring back to the tabletop or boxed game!

Battlefleet Gothic

I’m honestly surprised they haven’t brought this game back yet. And I know you can still find parts of it online — but I’m talking about a full blown rework/relaunch/release of the game. I was actually hoping the events of the Arks of Omen would lead to more Space-based combat but it seems things got diverted. Oh well. The Grimdark is a big place. Perhaps we’ll see Battlefleet Gothic make a comeback one day.

Gorkamorka

Okay here’s the pitch: It’s Necromunda, but with ORKS. Boom. That’s Gorkamorka, folks. Heck, Necromunda: Ash Wastes have already introduced vehicle rules. Plus the Orks have a rather impressive array of trukks and “cars” to bust out. And look, I know we got games like Speed Freeks that featured something similar.

But let’s be real: that’s not really what the players wanted. I’m sure GW has a good reason for not re-releasing Gorkamorka. I just can’t think of what it could be.

Warhammer Quest Games

The Warhammer Quest series has a long history of boxed games. But the two in the series that most recently came out where the Blackstone Fortress and Cursed City. Personally, I really liked these games and think they were a great concept. A small selection of characters progressing through a dungeon crawl-esque board game. Blackstone Fortress had some really cool mechanics for progression, too. Anyhow, I hope that one day GW revisits this concept and releases more Warhammer Quest style board games.

Mordheim

I’m tossing this in here because I know if I don’t someone is going to say something in the comments section. But I get it. I played a LOT of Mordheim with my buddies back in the day and I miss this one, too. While Warcry attempts to scratch that itch, it’s not the same. And let’s be real here the pitch is a lot like Gorkamorka: It’s Necromunda, but set in Warhammer Fantasy. Seems pretty straightforward. And I know there’s still an active community on the internet and you can find resources for it. But again, I want GW to come back and give this one a proper shot in the arm.

Warmaster

I know I’m probably in the minority here but I was really hoping The Old World was going to be a relaunch of Warmaster. I would of really liked to see this Warhammer Fantasy in this scale. Or now in the more modern Legions Imperialis version of Epic scale. You know what I’m talking about.

Who knows — maybe GW is also keeping this one on the backburner and waiting. I think between The Old World and the push for Legions Imperialis scale games it could work. However, I do think this one is really low priority for them. I don’t know what their capacity is for supporting another miniatures game like this.
