New RPG Set In The ‘Lancer’ Universe Is In The Works From Massif Press
Over the weekend, Massif Press announced that a new tabletop RPG set in the Lancer universe, Far Field, was in the works.
I love Lancer, the RPG. It is crunchy. It is full of mechs. And most importantly, it has a setting that is just the right flavor of sci-fi BS.
There are weird ancient vaults that exist outside of reality. Some of the mechs are magic. Others just use nanodrones. And sci-fi and fantasy get put into a blender and unleashed. Plus, there are swords. This is why I was super excited to see that Massif Press was developing a new RPG set in the world of Lancer but using a different ruleset. Called Far Field, the new RPG will be all about space exploration.
Massif Press Announces Far Field – A Game Of Space Exploration Beyond The Edges Of Known Space
According to Massif’s announcement, the new game is in the works from Katherine Stark. You might be familiar with Stark’s work on Lancer adventures, like the Tomb of Delios or Cathedral of the Dead Star. But, unlike Lancer, Far Field will be using a different ruleset. That’s because it has a different focus.
“Far Field is a game about teams of civilian scientists and explorers venturing out to the edges of known space – exploring the harsh, weird, and beautiful worlds of the galactic frontier. Out in the black, you and your fellow exploerers will discover strange alien fauna and flora, contact diasporan peoples long-discnnected from Union, and encounter unexplained mysteries at the edges of human comprehension.
The game will use the “Wild Words Engine.” Wild Words is “descendant” of the Forged-in-the-Dark ruleset. You can see it in action in the game Wildsea if you’re unfamiliar with it. Or you can check out the playtest docs for Far Field. They’re currently posted on the official Lancer Discord server.
But in a nutshell, the rules are all about coming up with creative solutions to your in-game challenges. If you want to see just how weird space can get, you won’t want to miss this one.
And you can always still use the Lancer rules whenever you need mechs!
