‘Warhammer: The Old World’- The Five Best Magic Armors For Legends Factions
Survive the dangers of the Warhammer: the Old World with these legend(ary) magic armors!
We’ve spent a fair bit of time looking at the best units in the game lately. However, units aren’t the only things that make up an army. Weapons, upgrades and especially magic items are a huge part of the game. Picking the best things to take can make or break your army. We’ve looked at the best common magic items before, but now I’ve started to drill down a little deeper into what is good and worth taking. However, there are a lot of items out there so we are going to have to break things down a lot.
Today, it’s time to continue looking at some of the items that the poor forgotten Legends factions gets. We’ve done weapons, so up next is armor of course! While there aren’t any AJs to draw from, there are still seven army lists so there are plenty of options here (however for good ones amor is pretty thin pickings). Lets take a look at what the best options out there are. As always, what is “best” can very a lot in your particular build. There are also a few items that would be amazing in some lists, but just aren’t that good in their army. Lastly we’ve always got to see how they measure up against just the core armors.
5. Cautious Shield (Skaven)
We are starting out with the kind of fun Cautious Shield. It’s a shield and you can sacrifice your attacks to get an extra +2 save from it (total of +3). While you won’t get any attacks you’ll be able to rock a nice 2+ save. Is this good? Err, I dunno, its not amazing, but that is the state of Legends magic armor. It is cheap enough you can put it on a champion. I do think it has some use in giving it to someone and having them challenge out a big character. You should be able to keep down the wounds they do in the challenge this way and maybe avoid them hitting max. Then with some good static combat res you can break them. It’s a trick you can try!
4. Gut Maw (Ogre Kingdoms)
It’s heavy armor and each wound you deal in a challenge heals you. A bit pricy yeah, but mounted Ogre characters have a decent amount of wounds and this can really help keep you alive. If you want a crazy tank, this is a really nice option. You can even eat a cannon ball or two and then get into a unit and a challenge get all healed up. A good option for some builds!
5. Trappings Of Nurgle (Daemons of Chaos)
I know it’s not technically “magic armor”, but also it totally is magic armor! 30 pts is a lot to pay for what is just full plate, and in another army it would be junk. But its also the only way to get a save on your Nurgle (non-daemon Prince) characters so from that point of view it could be well worth it. A Great Unclean One with it is very, very tank-y. On the other hand you can’t cast with it which is a shame, but still great for a really tough build.
2. Shield Of Ghrond (Dark Elfs)
The Shield of Ghrond isn’t cheap at 40 pts. But it is still one of the better magic amors around. It’s a shield but also drops the S of any attack vs you by 1. This comes in really useful when mounted on a dragon. S6 is pretty common and a lot of things that are going to be coming at you are will in that range (or 7 for some). Dropping those by 1S makes it significantly harder for the things that have a good shot at hurting you to hurt you. It’s really part of a nice and tank-y build.
1. The Flayed Hauberk (Vampire Counts)
I’ll admit that 35 pts is a lot to pay for heavy armor and a 6+ Ward save. However this armor does allow a wizard to wear it and still cast spells. If you are looking to try and make a fighting/casting vampire count this is your only option for armor, so it comes in handy. The 6+ ward is actually nice as not all armor that can be worn by wizards gives you anything else but the amor. It’s not the flashiest but it can be used for some nice builds and might just help you stay alive a bit longer!
