Get ready to slay your enemies with these Warhammer: the Old World legend(ary) weapons!

We’ve spent a fair bit of time looking at the best units in the game lately. However, units aren’t the only things that make up an army. Weapons, upgrades and especially magic items are a huge part of the game. Picking the best things to take can make or break your army. We’ve looked at the best common magic items before, but now I’ve started to drill down a little deeper into what is good and worth taking.  However, there are a lot of items out there so we are going to have to break things down a lot.

Today, it’s time to start looking at some of the items that the poor forgotten Legends factions gets. Of course we are going to start with magic weapons, the thing most players are most excited about. While there aren’t any AJs to draw from, there are still seven army lists so there are plenty of options here. Lets take a look at what the best options out there are. As always, what is “best” can very a lot in your particular build. There are also a few items that would be amazing in some lists, but just aren’t that good in their army. Lastly we’ve always got to see how they measure up against just the core weapons.

5. Thundermace (Ogre Kingdoms)

The Thundermace might be a controversial pick for this list. It’s expensive, makes your strike last and in some way’s isn’t all that good. And that’s all true. On the other hand it does something not a lot of other weapons do and has the potential to be one of the most devastating weapons in the game. Dropping a template (and a really good one) on the enemy could wipe out entire units in a single swing. It makes this a potentially very interesting choice (more so than the Tenderizer which is a pretty lateral, even a downgrade due to strikes last, move from the Ogre Blade). Sadly the current meta does not favor the kind of big blocks that would make the Thundermace great, so for now you are better off with just the Ogre Blade, but we can still dream about it’s potential power, right?

4. Lifetaker (Dark Elfs)

It’s not the deadliest weapon around, but Lifetaker is pretty neat. It can give you a few extra shots and adds in poison which is nice. There are some combos that make it extra useful (such as this one). There aren’t a ton of ranged magic weapons which also makes it kind of rare. It can add some nice utility and options to a Dark Elf list.

3. Blade Of Revered Tzunki (Lizardmen)

While it’s pricey, the Blade of Revered Tzunki can be pretty useful. It negates all enemy armor and ward saves. This can cut right though a lot of the toughest units around and ignore some of crazy combos out there. While it’s only +1 S, the characters wielding it start at 5, so you are still getting a nice S6. The enemy will get Regen saves, but those are rarer, and still count towards combat. It’s biggest draw back is only doing 1 wound per hit, however I think it’s reliability in getting past defenses makes it better vs the really tough things out there. You might argue that the Skaven Fellblade is better, and aside from having a chance to hurt the wielder – it is.  But the Fellblade is also locked to infantry and the people that carry it just aren’t as good.

2. Axe Of Khorne (Daemons Of Chaos)

Alright, technically this isn’t a magic weapon, it’s a Gift of Khorne. But, it’s got a weapon profile and works like one, so I’m counting. This is basically a 10 pts cheaper headsman axe from the BRB. Giving you Killing blow and +1 S and AP. That… really solid and works well for Khorne. It’s also super common so you can take more than one of them. It’s a pretty good option that would be broken in any other book.

1. Sword Of Kings (Vampire Counts)

I’mma gunna be honest with y’all. There is a huge jump from #2 to #1 on this list. The Sword of Kings is THE standout weapon among the Legends factions and one of the best weapons in the game, maybe the best. While it’s not cheap at 55 pts, it also leaves you plenty of points for other gear. +1S and AP and killing blow make it seem a lot like the basic Headsmen Axe. It is however not two-handed, which isn’t something to ignore. However most importantly it lets you get off killing blows on a 5+. A 5+!

That’s pretty huge. It very reliably lets you get off a killing blow especially when using something like a Ghoul King with 5 attacks and hatred. It gives you a decent chance of getting off a whole string of them. While it’s not great vs big monsters, vs anything that can be killing blowed (and of course Vamps can be immune thanks to their mounts) I think this turns into just an amazing weapon that is super scary, and deadly.
