Warhammer Underworlds: Two New Warbands Up Close
We’ve got the Jaws of Itzl and the Grandfathers Gardeners in the studio. Time to take a look at these two new warbands!
The new edition of Warhammer Underworlds is here. Embergard should be hitting shelves and all the downloads are available right now. To help usher in the new era Games Workshop is also introducing two more Warbands for pre-order this weekend. It’s the Jaws of Itzl (a new Seraphon Warband) and Grandfather’s Gardeners (a Maggotkin of Nurgle Warband). We’re going to be focusing on the miniatures themselves today. They have some really good sculpts (for the most part). So let’s check them out.
The Jaws of Itzl
The Jaws of Itzl consists of 4 miniatures total. There are three Saurus and one base of “jungle creatures.” I think the Saurus miniatures could easily be added to an army as unit champs or just alternate poses if you wanted to do that. But I also think we’ll be seeing warscrolls for them as a unit at some point, too.
Anyhow, the miniatures are made from dyed plastic like we’ve seen GW do previously for the Underworlds Warbands. These miniatures are also push-fit as well. If you have a hobby knife you could (theoretically) have these ready for the tabletop in minutes. But if you plan on painting them I’d probably take a bit more time than that…and also use glue.

Sotek’s Venomites
I do like the poses for these miniatures. Again, I think if any Seraphon players were looking for alternate sculpts for whatever reason these would each to nicely. Except for the Sotek’s Venomites…not sure where you’d use them. But I still like their base with the creatures none-the-less.
Grandfather’s Gardeners
The Nurgle Warband is called Grandfather’s Gardeners and they are basically a bunch of Plaguebearers. But not. Their leader Phemghmus Potbelly is certainly a character! As for the other Plaguebearers, again, I think you could slot them into a unit as special miniatures. They could be Icon Bearers or something different. Or just wait for the Warscroll card that we can guess is coming.
They are also push-fit miniatures and come in that dyed green plastic. I must say that the sculpts are packed with details on these miniatures. It’s easy to dismiss Plaguebearers as “just gross looking” but there’s a lot going on with each miniature. I think as a painting project this Warband would really test your skills. With all that sickly skin and pox marks you’d have your work cut out for you.

This is one gross Warband! I know at the top I said I was going to stick to the miniatures but I think Grandfather’s Gardeners deserve a quick look at their rules.
They have a similar cycle mechanic to the Maggotkin of Nurgle. However, this one doesn’t give them army wide buffs. Instead it can cause a “Reap A Harvest” to trigger which can heal a fighter. Between the heals and the Imperturbable rule, I think they could be a really tough Warband to take out on the tabletop!
The new edition of Warhammer: Underworlds is out now. These two new warbands are slated for a release on December 7, 2024!
