‘Critical Role’ Teases “Exciting Video Game Project Announcement” in the Near Future
Critical Role said that it was working on a video game back in 2021. Now a new announcement may be around the corner.
You gotta pre-announce everything these days. If Geoff Keighley’s very own The Game Awards proves anything, you gotta have a teaser trailer up to tease the announcement of the reveal trailer, which will be previewed during the Awards. But you don’t want to just say you’re doing something without a soft preveal to announce that you’re going to make an announcement.
This is important to keep in mind. Because when Critical Role mentions, in the course of an interview with Rolling Stone, that “video game news might be coming” in the near future, the previous paragraph will remind you that you haven’t slipped into some kind of Kafka-esque labyrinth of bureaucracies and announcements. That’s just reality baby.
And the reality is that Critical Role is going a video game. They said as much back in 2021. But it looks like sometime soon they might be ready to say even more. They’re saying as much now.
Critical Role Teases Video Game Announcement in Rolling Stone Retrospective
The whole thing is a tiny little blurb from Critical Role‘s recent interview with Rolling Stone. After talking about the wild ride, Rolling Stone inevitably asked about what lies ahead for the juggernaut of a livestreamed game-turned-media empire.
And the answer is, “make more stuff.” Including more livestreams, live shows, comics, and podcasts – even a holiday album. While all still holding to the idea of being a “bunchof nerdy-ass voice actors playing games,” according to CR Creative Director Marisha Ray. Which might well mean playing more games outside of just D&D. Especially with Campaign 3 starting to inch towards what one might think of as an “endgame.” Will we see more Daggerheart? We already are. Maybe that will take provenance as the system de jour for the main campaign (who knows!).
But what about the video game?
Well three years ago, back when the Legend of Vox Machina animated special was taking over Kickstarter, Critical Role was in talks about video games set in Exandria. After having conversations, it seems, they may be ready for more, at least according to CEO Travis Willingham:
“The last few years we have been necessary conversations to figure out how to dot hat smartly. It’s, you know, it’s an entire enterprise that’s separate from what we do on Beacon, Twitch, or YouTube, it’s separate from the animated series and it comes with its understanding that has to be undertaken […] We are starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve een undertaking for the last couple of years.
And hopefully, we’ll have something really exciting to share, maybe around the end of the year, maybe at the beginning of 2025, just in time for our 10-year anniversary.”
