D&D’s ‘How to Become a Dungeon Master’ Video is a Fun Watch For the DM Curious
Curious about what being a DM is like? Want to know a little more? A new video from D&D is a real nice little peek behind the screen.
WotC put up a new video on the Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel. Funnily enough, it almost seems like it was intended to be a Dungeon Master’s Guide preview video. Only they diverged from talking about the new DMG, and instead went into what it’s like to be a DM for twenty minutes.
And while that makes for a terrible preview video, it makes for a great look at DMing. Especially if you have no idea what it’s like. If you’ve ever been curious about DMing, this is a great video to start with (though there are plenty more that give much more actionable advice).
WotC’s How to Become a Dungeon Master Video – Chris Perkins Basically Talking About DMing For 22 Minutes
If you like D&D shop talk, you will love this video. The background art is all from the new Dungeon Master’s Guide (and every now and then they mention the DMG) which is why I think this was intended to be a preview. But the book has been out a while now.
And in the video, it’s just Chris Perkins talking about DM lessons he’s learned over the years. Or things he’s excited about when it comes to DMing. Which is pretty infectious. I think there’s something to be said for catching someone else’s excitement and using it to fuel your own.
“We wanted not only to demystify DMing and to make it as alluring a prospect as possible. But I think we wanted to just sprinkle in as many little things about DMing that a lot of experienced DMs take for granted, but is like a perk of DMing.
Because there is this conception (and it’s not an entirely mispalced one) that DMing is work. But it doesn’t have to feel like a chore.”
– Chris Perkins
So whether you’re a new DM or an old hand, it’s time to get excited about DMing. The new year is about to dawn. Escapism is going to be at a premium. Why not take a turn behind the screen?
Happy adventuring!
