Free League Announces Elven Expansions For ‘The One Ring’ and LOTR 5E
Listen up sickos, it’s time for elves. Free League announced two new elven expansions today: one for The One Ring and one for 5E.
There were famously three rings for the elven kings under the sky, in Middle-earth. First was Nenya, the Ring of Water, borne by Galadriel herself. There was Narya, the Ring of Fire, borne by Cirdan and given to Gandalf, whom the elves called Mithrandir, the Grey Pilgrim. And then there was Vilya, the Ring of Air, and the greatest of the three, carried by Gil-galad and then later Elrond.
But Free League is releasing two expansions. Well, sort of. It’s one expansion but for two rulesets. Because Free League produces both The One Ring RPG, which is its own discrete system, as well as the 5E adaptation of Middle-earth, called Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5th Edition or just LOTR 5E.
Both expansions bring the realms of the elves into the foreground. And both are up for pre-order right now, with immediate PDF access via DriveThruRPG shortly after you purchase. Because unlike certain Wizards that inhabit a Coast, Free League isn’t afraid of PDFs and doesn’t think you should pay twice for things you already own. So lay down your sweet and weary head, and let’s take a look.
Free League’s Elven Expansions For The One Ring and LotR 5E Are At Hand
The One Ring gets Realms of the Three Rings, referencing the three Rings of Power gifted to the elves. Meanwhile LOTR 5E gets Keepers of the Elven-Rings. Both expansions feature largely the same general concepts, which you can read below.
“In the twilight of the Third Age, three realms of the West-elves still endure in Middle-earth. By the power of the Three Rings they exist as a testament to a time that was. But not only the Elves remember. As Sauron gathers his strength to bring war to Middle-earth once again, he plans a devious vengeance against those who humbled him long ago.”
And as you might expect, these books are absolutely gorgeous. Free League has really pulled out the stops here. By and large here’s what you’ll find in either book:
- Writeups of the realms of Lorien, Rivendell, and Lindon as well as those who still live therein, including the powerful Elf-lords.
- Dark Designs from a Dark Lord – You can learn what Sauron has been up to and how has has been scheming against the elves with new events, enemies, and NPCs to encounter.
- Landmarks – These books live and die by their fantastic landmarks. You’ll find 12 sites of interest here, which you’ll be familiar with if you’ve read the books or seen the movies.
- Rules of Lordship – An appendix of rules, which is fitting for Middle-earth, all about creating and playing as High Elves from Rivendell or the Elves of Lorien, or even playing solo as one of the great Elf-lords yourself.
Now to diminish, and pass away into the West!
