Light a Candle, ‘Cthulhu By Gaslight: Keeper’s Guide’ is Due Out in 2025
Cthulhu by Gaslight promises eldritch horror in the Victorian Age. And a new Keeper’s Guide will have everything GMs need to know.
Cthulhu by Gaslight is one of Chaosium’s hottest new books. And it’s not hard to see why—putting the Cthulhu Mythos in Victorian England seems like a match made in Lost Carcosa, if not Unknown Kadath. Gaslamps and flickering horrors blend with a predilection towards the occult that is just perfect for a roleplaying game.
Today, Chaosium revealed a look at the upcoming guide for GMs, or Keepers. In the Cthulhu by Gaslight Keeper’s Guide, you’ll find everything you need to run a game where the horrors of the Mythos mesh with the horrors of the Victorian Age.
Cthulhu by Gaslight Keeper’s Guide – Coming 2025!
I’m personally quite excited for this. Because Victorian England is a great setting for one. You had Victorian occultism, which is very much some of the inspiration for the mystic leanings of the cultists of the elder gods in Lovecraft’s work. But you also have a lot of fog and eerie environs. There was a miniature ice age in the middle of it.
It was a time of strange things and new discoveries. When the world still could be turned on its head. And that is perfect for grappling with the goat with a thousand young, for example.
“Cthulhu by Gaslight takes the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game to the fog-shrouded streets of Great Britain and beyond. This book is designed for Keepers—those who will be running the game.”
Of course, it takes more than just a few setting details to recast the Mythos in this era. So you can expect a lot for GMs to lean on, including new enemies lurking in the shadows as well as new occult tools to be wielded against meddlesome investigators:
- Advice for bringing the setting to life.
- Information on villainous organizations and occult societies like the Secrets of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
- Two introductory scenarios designed for players new to the setting.
- Scenario seeds to help you pen Cthulhu by Gaslight stories of your own design.
- Monsters and Mythos elements unique to Gaslight-era Britain.
- Gazetteer of Fear—100+ locations in Britain and beyond.
- New occult-based skills, spells, tomes, and rules for astral combat.
Happy adventuring!
