Warhammer 40K: Favorite Grotmas Detachments So Far

We’re slowing chugging through the Grotmas Detachments of Games Workshop as the days tick by. Here’s our favorites — so far.

We’ve gotten 17 days of Grotmas Detachments and they look to keep on coming. With that in mind, I wanted to hit the pause button and pick out a few that genuinely got my attention. If I were going to play or start an army in the new year, I’d probably go with one of these three picks.

Warrior Bioform Onslaught

My first pick is near and dear to my heart. It’s the Tyranid Bioform Onslaught. Personally, I already try to run a ton of Tyranid Warriors in my army. So this one feels like one I’d gravitate towards anyways.  The Tyranid Warriors being Battleline and getting 5+ Invulnerable save? Yes, please!

Obviously this detachment is pushing you to use a Winged Tyranid Prime as well. However, don’t discount the other units that complement this list. Synaptic Amplification really make the Warriors and Endless Multitude units a royal pain to take out. I do enjoy using very tanky bugs!

Creations of Bile

Normally, I’d never really consider running Fabius Bile in my Chaos Lists. He’s just not a character I particularly care for. Sorry, not sorry. However, this detachment is really making consider taking him just for the buff. Experimental Augmentations just make your Chaos Space Marines better. And personally, I’d rather run a lot of CSM vs Cultists any time I can. This detachment really benefits them.

I’ve been dabbling with a CSM list that includes a whole lot of Heretic Astartes Infantry. The core is Abaddon, Terminators, and then a boat load of Legionaries. Now I want to re-jigger this list just to add in this detachment with Fabius Bile and I think I can totally swing that.

Reaper’s Wager

Okay, I have to include this one my list here. I don’t play Drukhari or Harlequins. But I think this one deserves to be looked at more closely. Why? Because it’s got one of the most unique interactions out of every single detachment we’ve seen so far. I have to give some props to the GW Designers for the Callous Competition mechanic. This concept of basically passing back and forth a buff between two sides of the same detachment is cool and creative.

I wish we got more of this in the detachment rules department instead of blanket “this unit is better now.” Sure, this adds some bookkeeping but it’s also benefits players who really know their timing and target priority. It almost makes me want to play this detachment. Maybe I’ll borrow some minis from a buddy and give it a go!

Those are my top three Grotmas Detachments — so far. Do you have a favorite over the past 17 days?
