Blocking weapons get completely reworked in Space Marine 2‘s big new balance patch. Now you can hew through enemies and be safe!

In the grim darkness of the distant future, a trusty sword is, as often as not, better than a weapon that spews white hot plasma. It is not an uncommon sight to see a commander of the Astra Militarum rising up out of the cupola of one of the many tanks in the Imperium, brandishing their blade and telling the tank crew to get within melee range.

And players of Space Marine 2 are intimately familiar with why swords and other melee weapons are the most devastating tools, despite existing in a galaxy with 1.) missiles, and 2.) psychic powers and/or magic. Although there’s always been an odd-transhumans-uper-soldier out in the weapons category: blocking weapons.

Despite the name, blocking weapons weren’t necessarily the best defensive weapons. Sure, they had better stat boosts, but that hardly mattered when Fencing or Balanced weapons gave you much more power. Now, though, the big alance update, Patch 5 for Space Marine 2 looks to change that. Blocks are buffed. And there’s also a new Obelisk operation and more.

Space Marine 2 Patch 5 – Big Balance Update: Blocking Buffs You Now

In Space Marine 2 Patch 5, you’ll find a number of cool features added to the game. This includes the much-anticipated Dark Angels Chapter Pack, meaning you can now start being the gothic Space Marine knight of your dreams.

There’s also a new Operation for you to try out. In Obelisk you’ll interface with a strange artifact to try and disrupt an energy field. You might even clash with new enemies, likethe Tzaangor Enlightened.

But the meat of the new update is Melee. Melee damage has been increased across the board, so that you can do more than just “parry -> gun strike” on higher difficulties. And Blocking Weapons have been reworked drastically:

“In short, by blocing enemy attacks, the player will accumulate up to 3 stacks of Melee Damage buffs. Attacking while having those stacks of buffs will spend them and will result in massive AoE Damage discharge.”

On top of the new stacking damage buff, Blocking Weapons have been granted a “perfect block” mechanic. Perfectly timed blocks will grant stacks of a buff called Adrenaline Surge. Any followup melee attack will consume the adrenaline surges to deal extra damage, including once again, massive AoE damage, as well as staggering enemies and even restoring armour segments.

All of that is just a taste of what you can expect in the new patch. For full notes, check here.
