Goatboy here with the most important changes GW can bring to Warhammer 40K in 2025 – to keep it growing strong!

As we wind down 2024, here are the three changes I would like to see come to 40K next year.  This isn’t just rules changes but instead pulling back and looking big picture at this last year of releases and things I would love to see happen to 40K in the future.  In fact I think the rules for the game are in a pretty good place beyond some other issues I have with how we get and engage with them.  With that let me get on my soap box, pull out some smart looking glasses, and clear my throat a bit as I wax poetic about this game.

These are in no particular order and I think all of these things would help set up 40K for a really strong next year.  I know we need a lot of codexes released and I will talk a bit about it in these ideas.  This is also me not trying to skewer the game that obsesses us but rather some thoughts on how things can be cleaned up and made easier for new players to get involved.

Make Digital Rules Available Outside of Printed Codexes

Let’s make getting a hold of the 40K faction rules separated from printed codexes that have had so many “updates” that buying a new one becomes not worth it to actually play the game.

I love having updates to our grimdark rules.  I love seeing how balance is carried out through digital updates.  I don’t like how a new player has to buy a book that might not be valid just to get a digital code to activate the rules in an App they are already paying for.  There needs to be a way for players to either just purchase digital codes to allow for their app to be fully ready to go to play their new army they just finished building and painting.  A friend hit me up asking about looking back at the game and I had to explain to him that while getting a codex will get him some info it won’t be the full rules for him to play the game as units got updates.  I have the App and access to rules so it’s easy for me to quickly go check out other armies, verify builds I am playing against, and letting me write about this nonsense each week.

Heck even if GW just charged a smaller fee for the Digital rules code it would be helpful.  I would love a system where someone could pay a monthly fee to get all the basic rules for the game and armies.  GW should still produce Physical codexes because having places where the pictures of units, model painting info, and fluff is a cool thing.  We just need to have a better way to get consistent current, complete rules access and usage.

Starter Sets for More Armies

I do really like the releases of “Splash army Sets” with army codex and cards included as a method to “start” an army, like the recent Blood Angel set.  I would love to see more 40K releases with different armies and codexes included. It would be amazing to for a new player to be able to purchase a starter army and have a real codex in there to help start their journey in this hobby.  GW can throw in some new models, push a specific detachment build in the box, and heck even throw in some other fun stuff to help get a new player started witht he faction.  I also really miss seeing faction dice in the boxed set as it would just truly create a fantastic themed “get started moment” for a new player. There needs to be a better thought in creating a logical purchasing stream for a new player to go from such faction starter sets to purchasing updates to their army.

Competitive Mission Decks In the 40K App

There should be a way to get all the relevant mission information needed to play a game in the GW App.  This way any balances, updates, etc can be easily done and the “cards” while fun are not needed to play the game.  I really just want the App to be more robust as it is pretty usable right now – but only if you have access to all the rules. I use it all the time to build things, verify stuff, and just figure out what I want to do next.  Just having the Missions we all play in the App will just make sure we all are playing on the same page, not looking things up online, and hoping all the updates are there.

I know that GW is a physical game and so they want the rules to stay physical – but it’s almost 2025, not 1987 – we should have full options for both.  I like having the books to look at the pretty models, read the fluff, and check out things.  But when I play at events I want to go as light as I can with just my models, my game play stuff, and the rules in my phone.

What do you think 40K needs in 2025?
