Warhammer Grotmas Day 13 – Aeldari & Drukhari Detachments Unleash The Family Feud
The Craftworld Aeldari and their Drukhari cousins are here to spread some Grotmas cheer with two new detachments for Warhammer 40,000.
Games Workshop has a double whammy gift today. It’s two gifts on the 13th day of the Grotmas Calendar. The Asuryani are getting the Armoured Warhost detachment. Their Drukhari kin are getting the Reaper’s Wager detachment. So we got a lot of ground to cover — let’s dive in!
Aeldari – Armoured Warhost
“When unleashed in number, the vehicles of the Aeldari can bring a terrifying volume of firepower to bear with exceptional speed. As supersonic aircraft suppress the enemy with strafing runs, sleek battle‐skimmers sweep low across war‐scarred terrain, hunting down and obliterating their targets with scintillating volleys. “

Move over Saim-Hann, it’s time for the other Craftworlds to hit the gas. This a very vehicle themed army. I mean, sure, you could still use Saim-Hann…but this detachment just applies (mostly) to Aeldari Vehicles. That’s all in the Skill Crews detachment rule.
Ranged Weapons on vehicles gain the Assault ability. Additionally, you can re-roll your advance rolls for any Aeldari Vehicles with the Fly keyword, too.
Look, I played in the unkillable Wave Serpent/Falcon era of Mechdar. I don’t think this detachment is *that* levels of busted…but it’s not bad either. Keep in mind that it’s ALL Aeldari Vehicles that get the assault ability, not just flyers. There’s also something to work with inside the four enhancements and six stratagems. If nothing else it’s a good excuse to dust off your old Mechdar lists and see if you can make it work with these rules.
Drukhari – Reaper’s Wager
“When Harlequins and Drukhari go to war as one, Commorrite warriors often perform an accompanying role in its retelling. Bladed Drukhari transports emerge from the Webway alongside coruscating Harlequin skimmers. Kabalite Warriors let rip from firing decks, and Wyches howl and whoop as they leap acrobatically into the fray. As Harlequin troupes begin their gore‐slick recital, they inhabit their roles wholeheartedly, competing furiously with their Drukhari allies to score the greatest tally of luridly violent kills.”

The theme of this detachment is a combination of Drukhari forces and Harlequins added in. The amount of Harlequins you can add is based on the size of the game. That said, they have a really unique back-and-forth buff mechanic. The Drukhari start “winning” this wager and it flip-flops back and forth between which ever side has most recently destroyed an enemy unit.
Which ever side is “losing” the wager at the time get’s re-rolls to 1s on their hit and wound rolls. Due to how this works and the timing of it you can basically pass this boost back and forth with a bit of planning (and some luck).
Once again, four enhancements and six stratagems are present. I’ll let you sort out how you feel about their rules. Personally, I like the concept of these two forces teaming up in this manner. If nothing else this is perhaps the most creative detachment rule I’ve seen from Grotmas yet. Sure, there’s been “Team-up” rules in previous detachments before but those were basically auras.
This involves more “bookkeeping” in a way. I’d suggest using a double-sided token or something you can flip over to show which faction has the buff. It could be a fun hobby thing to make, too. The Reaper’s Wager Detachment has this unique interaction that I don’t recall seeing before. So at least GW is trying something new.
Index Updates
Oh and as a quick reminder, both of these armies recently got their Index Updated. So be sure to check out those links below if you haven’t already.
Holiday family parties must get pretty wild when these two get around the dinner table.
