Warhammer: Grotmas Day 4 – Dust Off The Thousand Sons With This Detachment
That’s not snow, it’s DUST! The Thousand Sons are getting a gift for Grotmas with the Hexwarp Thrallband for Warhammer 40,000.
Games Workshop continues with the Grotmas gifts. Today we have a look at the new detachment for the Thousand Sons and their Hexwarp Thrallband. The arcane energy of the Rubricae march forward under the control of the potent Chaos Sorcerers in this new Thousand Sons themed army option.

They seek to shatter the veil between reality and the Warp, empowering their arcane arts and unleashing daemonic energies upon their weak‐minded foes. Directing mindless Rubricae to seize sites of power, these Sorcerers tap into the wellspring of potential, weaving obscuring rituals and killing spells. With warpflame and hellfire, they sweep the enemy from the field of battle, and Tzeentch claims the souls of the dead.”
Thousand Sons Hexwarp Thrallband Detachment
As with the previous detachments you can download this one for free right here. It’s lore-wise it’s centered around the ebb and “Flow of Magic” (which is the Detachment special rule) on the battlefield. In terms of “army construction theme or detachments centered on specific units” this one is pretty forgiving. It’s really prodding players to take keyword Thousand Sons and that’s about it.
Basically, areas of the battlefield are under the Flow of Magic rule. These areas include the Thousand Sons deployment zone (always under Flow of Magic), No Man’s Land, and the opponent’s deployment zone. The Thousand Sons player needs to control at least half of the objectives in the other two zones for them to be under the Flow of Magic effect.
This boosts the Psychic Attacks of Thousand Sons units. They get to re-roll 1s on their Wound rolls. Alternatively if they are wholly within an area that is under the Flow of Magic it’s +1 to Wound rolls instead. Both of those are nice boosts to the army in general.
All four of the Enhancements for the detachment also interact with the Flow of Magic areas in some way. They all basically boost some part of the Thousand Sons psychic kit be it attacks or abilities. For example, Arcane Might adds to the Strength of Psychic Weapons. How much depends on the Flow of Magic status.
The Noctilith Mantle is the exception. It basically causes the bearer and their unit to always be under the Flow of Magic effect. So enjoy that board-wide boost to Wound rolls.
Naturally, the Hexwarp Thrallband also has six more stratagems to use as well. You can see those above. I like the Strands of Time stratagem as it allows a unit that Fell Back to still shoot and declare a charge in the same turn.
Personally, I would have liked to see this detachment have a more focused… uh, focus. As in a specific unit or unit type like Rubric Marines or Scarab Occult Terminators. But I’m also not complaining about having a “simple to track” detachment rule. Things that are keyword Thousand Sons just get better under this detachment and that’s good enough for Grotmas!
