Goatboy here to let you know –  Custodes Venerable Contemptor Dreadnoughts are headed to a tabletop near you. Be warned!

Here’s a warning for those players who might be playing a competitive event anytime soon – Adeptus Custodes Venerable Contemptor Dreadnoughts are pretty dang rough in the new Solar Spearhead Detachment.  In fact I would expect to see three of them now in any of those dang Vehicle lists from the Grotmas detachment.  Let’s chat why they are so good and what makes them tick.

Custodes Venerable Contemptors are Tough, Hard to Kill

These things have a 2+ armor save, a 5+ invulnerable save, with 10 Wounds and Toughness 9.  This is a pretty rough little set up as they can easily grab a 2+ to 3+ with cover against most weapons and still live to tell the tale.  On top of that they also have a pesky little rule called Unyielding Ancient that allows them to get back up on a 2+ when they don’t explode the first time you take them out.

That’s right you spend all this effort to get rid of this golden big boi and he stands up and says “I didn’t hear no bell.”  It is a pretty crushing defeat of your army’s effectiveness and one of the few things in the game that just doesn’t go down.  It comes back with d6 wounds remaining and since it doesn’t degrade in effectiveness as it loses wounds it is going to step and fire some close Range Multi-Melta in your face.

Oh and being able to stand back up again means you can be a bit “loose” with them as they move forward and get in the way – leaving your Custodes FW tanks the ability to shoot you all game.  Just having any options to “take” away an enemies killing ability by standing back up is huge.  It just deflates that player a bit to know that they are going to have to do it all over again as the Custodes Dreads  gett close.

Custodes Venerable Contemptors Hit Hard

Remember how the Solar Spearhead Detachment rewards your vehicles by getting a reroll 1’s to hit on models that hit on a 2+ already.  Yup this guy is going to shuffle around throwing out haymakers and burning beams of death all game long. Heck if you blow it up and it stands up it now rerolls 1’s to hit and 1’s to wound as well.  That is just a ton of power in a pretty cheap model in the Adeptus Custodes.

Oh and look they also have 5 close combat Attacks that hit on 2’s and reroll 1’s as well. Those attacks are Strength 12, Ap -2, and flat 3 damage which can do a number to all those small elite units.  They are tough enough to take the punch back, kill some guys, and hopefully shoot some close range Multi-Melta in their faces.

Custodes Venerable Contemptors Move Fast

Oh hey the detachment let you gain 2” to their movement as well as add 1 to the advance and charge rolls.  Sure this model is most likely not going to be advancing and charging like the Telemon will but just being able to move 9”+d6 to go get an objective will be an important piece to the scoring puzzle of this army.  Just having movement to get things done and if you need to, move fast, die, and then get back up again will be important to a winning strategy.

This is one of the few Horus Heresy models that are still useable in 40K.  They didn’t go away in the updates and it isn’t even in Resin.  If you can find 3 for your army and you want to play Custodes the “easy way” with 18 models get these guys painted gold and get ready to be a pain on the tabletop.

For the Emperor!
