On February 4th, D&D Beyond will feature a brand-new, free adventure titled Hold Back the Dead, featuring the Red Wizards of Thay.

A brand new adventure is set to launch on D&D Beyond tomorrow, February 4th. Hold Back the Dead is a new, free adventure made for the 5.5E Ruleset. It featurest he Red Wizards of Thay up to a nefarious scheme that it’s up to the players to stop.

And while it features all of D&D Beyond’s fancy bells and whistles, including a new DM-ified fortress map and player-friendly maps for use with D&D Beyond’s maps, the thing that really leaps out is: this might be the big “Red Wizards centered” adventure that designers spoke of at last year’s D&D Live. Which is cool, since it’s a free adventure, I think many had assumed it would be a big adventure book. Though those seem fewer and further between right now.

Hold Back the Dead Launches February 4th on D&D Beyond

So what is Hold Back the Dead, anyway? Well, according to the D&D Beyond Page, here’s what we know:

Deep in the Western Heartlands, an evil Red Wizard conspires to overtake the land. Face hordes of deadly monsters and defend a mighty fortress from ruin in this challenging, single-session adventure.

Hold Back the Dead is a FREE digital adventure that is compatible with the 2024 Core Rulebooks. It contains a fortress map for Dungeon Masters and unlocks player-friendly maps, character tokens, and creature tokens for the D&D BEYOND Maps tool.

In short, it’s a one-shot adventure that pits players against the Red Wizards. Though, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just a teaser adventure, for something planned for 2026. The Red Wizards of Thay are a many-splendored villainous organization. So I could easily see this as a prelude to a larger campaign. At any rate, you can check out Hold Back the Dead for yourself tomorrow.

Get ready to Hold Back the Dead!
