Neverwinter Nights got a new update a while back. Now it has new DLC. Truly, there is no stopping the Hero of Neverwinter.

More than two decades ago, Neverwinter Nights kicked off a whole new era of D&D video games. It was the first video game to use the 3rd Edition D&D rules. It was the first to be in a 3D world. And it launched with multiplayer and custom campaign creation in mind.

It really was a roleplaying renaissance, as the old trailer used to say. Now, in 2025, somehow, Neverwinter Nights is getting brand new DLC. And it’s not just one, but it seems many are planned for an epic continuation of the story of the Hero of Neverwinter.

Of course, it isn’t as though someone just released new DLC out of the blue. The New DLC is technically for Beamdog’s Enganced Edition of Neverwinter Nights, which updated the game wto run on modern machines. But, the fundamental core game is still the same is always been. The new DLC just arrived on Steam, let’s check it out.

The new DLC, The Doom of Icewind Dale released over the weekend. And while it was a surprise to me, this has been a long time coming. According to its creator, Luke Scull, this has been a run up to an epicntale of Neverwinter:

“After more than 20 years, the story of the Hero of Neverwinter finally continues in this epic new adventure from Luke Scull, fantasy author and lead designer of Tyrants of the Moonsea!

In the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale, the Hero of Neverwinter awakens. Stripped of their recent memories and left to die by a mysterious power, they must survive a dire threat to the dale as they seek the truth behind their abduction. The answers they discover will shape the very fate of the Forgotten Realms.

Explore the arctic wilderness of the infamous Icewind Dale. Fight snow goblins, ice trolls, yetis, and worse as you navigate the frozen tundra and icy wastes and uncover a sinister plot to unleash a rage-filled godling upon the North. Only with the aid of friends old and new will the legendary Hero of Neverwinter be able to recover their memories and prevent the Doom of Icewind Daleā€¦”

This is a 10-15 hour long expansion that comes with new companions, a new region, and a whole new story to explore. And this is just the first part of a longer campaign, the Blades of Netheril, which Scull has in development right now. You can find out more on Steam.

See you in Neverwinter!
