Free League and Skybound Entertainment are collaborating to develop a tabletop RPG based on the world of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible.

Invincible was an amazing comic series, and a doubly amazing animated series. If you haven’t read or watched it, you are missing out on a truly spectacular superhero story. At its heart, it’s about family, trauma, and growing up.

But it’s also got some of the best worldbuilding this side of Jack Kirby’s Celestials. It’s not just the superheroes and power sets, but how far they take it. This is a world where someone’s head can get punched off, where whole other dimensions can invade our reality, and aliens fly around in space. It’s enough to make you wish you were

Invincible RPG Coming Soon From Free League

According to a new press release and accompanying trailer, the RPG will run on the award-winning Year Zero Engine. This is the same system at the heart of many of Free League’s games. If you’ve played Tales from the Loop or the Blade Runner RPGs, you have had a taste of what this engine has to offer a roleplaying game.

And it’s mix of modes seems perfect for stories that aspire to Invincible’s storytelling. In the game you’ll have action scenes where you can do the aforementioned head punching and social scenes where you can recover from having your head punched off. Free League co-founder and lead designer Tomas Harenstam even references the “visceral” nature of the series in the release:

“One of my very first tabletop roleplaying games was the old Marvel Superheroes by TSR, and making a superhero RPG has been a lifelong dream. I think the genre, and Invincible’s more grounded and visceral take on it, is a great fit for the Year Zero Engine game mechanics.”

If you’re wondering if you get to know when the game comes out, here’s the neat part, you don’t. At least not yet. Free League hasn’t released more than the initial announcement and some preview art. But the signup page is live, so you can register to be notified when the Campaign launches.

In the meantime, if you needed reason for a rewatch, here it is.

Superheroes done the way you’d hope!
