We welcome our Droid-overlords with the arrival of the new Aqua Droids in Star Wars: Legion from Atomic Mass Games!
The Aqua Droids are coming to a Star Wars: Legion tabletop near you. We’ve got them in the house and are taking a look inside the box. AMG sent me a review copy and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this one. This set is one of the first “new” style sets that was revealed after the updates. So let’s get inside and see what’s new.
Aqua Droids Unboxed
To kick things off we’ve got the pretty standard packaging from AMG at this point. Everything in the box pertaining to the miniatures is in plastic baggies. The cards and tokens are also in a baggy as well. You also get a flyer that’s got the QR code to that takes you to the instructions for assembly.
Sprue-wise, the two sprues look REALLY similar but it turns out they are different. It’s not quite a mirrored thing…I believe it’s just how they are laid out. There’s also a couple of different bits when you compare the two sprues.
One of the nice things about this design is that they actually stack on top of each other which is nice for packing I’m sure. It also means the bits won’t get banged-up in transport and the frames have pegs on them, too.
Another nice facet of these new Star Wars: Legion miniatures is that they are the new style hard plastic. The details are sharp and it’s really easy to work with. While I do miss the simplicity of the “lock and key” style of the old minis, I prefer the overall upgrade in material quality. Plus, these miniatures aren’t that complicated to build.
You also get all the relative cards you’ll need to use them in game. The new style box also contains sets for all four supported languages. I’m pretty sure that was a move by AMG to 1) reach more players and 2) to simplify the production pipeline. No need to reprint new cards for each support region — just print them all, put them in the same boxes, and ship them everywhere.
Now, if you’re looking for more of a rules deep dive, I’ve actually covered the Aqua Droids already. You can get a look at their rules here.
One last thing I wanted to mention was that these Droids are somewhat customizable in terms of poses. Because of the way they joints are setup, you can position them to make distinct members of the squad. They aren’t exactly “freeform” ball joints. But if you wanted to make some strategic snips and cuts you could make these even more customizable. Just be sure you’re glue is up to the task of keeping them together. Otherwise, you’d want to pin them…and at that point, well, I’d rather have just kept the “default” options.
The Aqua Droids are already out and in stores. So get them to reinforce your Star Wars: Legion army today!
