Big news in the tabletop RPG industry, Steve Jackson Games and Possum Creek have joined forces. Here’s what that means.
This week, Steve Jackson Games announced that Possum Creek, publishers of Wanderhome and Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast, had joined forces. According to the announcement, Possum Creek will now be an imprint of Steve Jackson Games.
It’s been a busy week for the makers of GURPS, Munchkin, and soon Fighting Fantasy. But it seems like they’ll have some new faces at the table, as some of the Possum Creek team find roles in SJG as well. These are exciting times for tabletop RPGs.
Possum Creek Joins Steve Jackson Game As An Imprint
The makers of Wanderhome will still have “full creative and editorial control” over their work. Additionally, Possum Creek’s editorial director and designer, Jay Dragon, and Art Director, Ruby Lavin, will take on new roles at Steve Jackson Games:
“We are thrilled to announce that Possum Creek, the award-winning independent game publisher, has joined Steve Jackson Games as an imprint. Based in Philadelphia, Possum Creek is best known for Wanderhome, a pastoral fantasy RPG about traveling animal-folk. Wanderhome has won numerous awards, including ENNIEs for Best Family-Friendly Game, Best Cover Art, and Best Interior Art.
As an imprint, Possum Creek will still have full creative and editorial control over their titles. However, the Possum Creek team will also lend their talents to the SJ Games design and visual branding. Jay Dragon, Editorial Director at Possum Creek, will join our Board Of Directors and become our Lead Game Designer. Ruby Lavin will become our Art Director while retaining that position at Possum Creek.”
It’s an interesting mix, to be sure. Because Steve Jackson Games, to most folks, is either the maker of GURPS or the maker of Munchkin. They publish a bunch of other games as well, but those are the big two that come up first – unless you are a big fan of Ogre. But if you’ve played both GURPS and Wanderhome, you’ll note that the two games are very different. Both in terms of gameplay mechanics and overall goals.

I am very excited to see what this collaboration looks like. If Possum Creek’s aesthetics and design sensibilities blend with Steve Jackson Games’ sourcebook deep dive lore (case in point, Steve Jackson Games once was raided by the Secret Service because of their GURPS Cyberpunk sourcebook) – well you’re gonna get an interesting mix as a result.
You can read more in the announcement post here. And you can be sure there’ll be more news about the partnership coming from Steve Jackson Games in the coming months.
Looks like the future is bright for Steve Jackson games and Possum Creek!
