If you’re new to Warhammer 40,000 and are looking for a way to steadily grow your collection then Combat Patrol Magazine is for you.

Games Workshop is working with Hatchette Partworks to produce the Combat Patrol Magazine once again. This time it’s for the subscribers in the USA!

“The magazine is designed to introduce you to the vast and rich setting of Warhammer 40,000. Over the course of the magazine, you’ll also get introduced to the core rules of Warhammer 40,000, as well as the Combat Patrol game mode itself.”

But that’s not all. Over the course of the subscription plan, you’ll receive NINE full Combat Patrols for the following armies:

  • Space Marines
  • Tyranids
  • Aeldari
  • Chaos Space Marines
  • Orks
  • Leagues of Votann,
  • Genestealer Cults
  • Astra Militarum
  • World Eaters

Additionally, each faction also comes with an additional unit that’s not typically in their Combat Patrol and includes a new datasheet to use as well.

“You can also upgrade to a premium subscription to supercharge your collection with bigger miniatures such as the hulking Brutalis Dreadnought and the Rogal Dorn Battle Tank, which make great painting projects and ideal next steps for expanding into larger armies.”

Combat Patrol Magazine Worth It?

Personally, I’m a little conflicted about this one. On the one hand it’s a great way to slow-grow your collection as you get new miniatures as well as the magazine contents overtime. And I think the price is maybe a little cheaper than buying these kits individually or on par with the Combat Patrol boxes themselves. But there’s extras and “gifts” you can also receive from the subscription plan, too. I’d call that a bit of a wash.

The downside is you have to wait to get all these miniatures. They send them to you in batches based on the subscription period. Again, for some folks that can be great. By the time you’re done with one set a new one shows up. It’s certainly less overwhelming that buying everything all at once and then getting lost in all that plastic. But not everyone is willing to wait to get a “functional” combat patrol when you can just go out and get a box immediately.

If you’re not in a rush to build everything and you’re okay with getting a subscription then this seems like a good way to do it. If you are interested be sure you check to see how you’ll be charged for each Combat Patrol Magazine shipment, too. I wouldn’t consider this a product that’s targeted towards long-time players or folks who already have armies they play. This seems like a good idea for new players in particular. Either way, I’d check the fine print on this one before I signed up for it.

I like the slow grow army idea. I just don’t know if this one is for me in particular. What do you think of the Combat Patrol Magazine?
