Warhammer 40K: What the Chaos Cult Codexes Need

Goatboy here with what we need to see coming for the other Chaos Cult Legion codexes, World Eaters, Thousand Sons, & Death Guard.
It looks like we got Emperor’s Children are coming down the pipeline soon which is pretty exciting. Instead of talking about those degenerates, let’s focus on what I want to see coming for the other Chaos Marine Cult Legion codexes. When we get the EC book we should get a pretty good idea on what’s in store for our books but today I want to talk about my hopes and dreams for each of the Legions and will see how much of it I guess correctly.
I think the big thing I want to see in all three codexes is a bigger shift to differentiate each of the armies and make them feel unique. Right now we can see the two “index” armies we have – while different from CSM – are not all that shifted in nature. Sure the World Eaters are a very assault oriented force and Thousand Sons use complicated magic to run the game. The Death Guard are slow and try to grind the game out with overlapping auras and powerful synergies between their forces. World Eaters just want to get there as fast as they can and see how many times Angron gets to come back. I would really like to see some of this pushed in those directions to create really unique forces on the tabletop.
World Eaters Hopes & Dreams
I’ll start with World Eaters. I really like the blessings roll and while I think it is fully fluffy we should really rethink how Angron keeps coming back. There are games where that can be back breaking and then there are others where this just never happens. I used to keep a tally of how many triple 6’s I rolled in the 6 events I played with World Eaters and I will say it didn’t happen too often. I wonder if there is a way to make it “less” random but less back breaking that a model comes back 3+ time can be. I wonder if they just shift it to something like the GSC option where you only have X amount of rebirths you can do per game. I don’t want the blessing roll to go away as it is a very fun and unique option.
I would also think each of the World Eaters “detachments” we get would focus on different aspects of their battle game plan. Things like “punch harder”, “move faster”, a tithe system for killing stuff, and maybe even a vehicle base detachment. A brass stampede of sorts that would be unique. I really want to see what kind of Daemon nonsense they get as well as blending some of their rules in some kind of “party” of blood and skulls sounds awesome and fun.
Thousand Sons Hopes & Dreams
On the other side of this we have the Thousand Sons and it really seems their old way of doing spells is not going to stay around. You just have to look at the Grotmas detachment and how that didn’t have any of the Rituals involved and you can get an idea that GW may be throwing it out for something all new. I think a system of either cascading magic would be cool or some kind of option to “cast” spells via your leaders like the Seer Council in Aeldari book. You could have a whole slew of Stratagems that you can make free with your powers and create a really unique force. I really feel like a top down redesign will end up happening and depending on how it rolls out will see if Thousand Sons keep going as the thinking players army or it ends up being just the army chosen by someone wanting a “best” of award.
Death Guard Hopes & Dreams
The last one is of course the Death Guard and it feels like there are a few directions they could go. I wonder if they end up making them tougher and cleaning up some of their armies interactions. I never liked the full everything is sticky option and think a few other things could be more interesting. The ability to have staking auras always sound interesting to me and thought having a bunch of hero based “plagues” they could unleash would be a neat build type to help the army out. It is one of the few fully “fleshed” out armies with plastic kits that cover a ton of HQ choices, a ton of troop options, and unique “daemon” engines that don’t overlap with the CSM choices. I am sure they will have a Shadow of Chaos like ability that lets you “corrupt” the board as you take over objectives and cause problems. It just feels like a pretty easy “slam dunk” rules interactions.
Excited for Emperor’s Children!!!
What do you want out of the new books? It feels like will see them soon and have a plethora of choices for those wanting to dabble in the chaos side of things. Right now I am excited about the upcoming Emperor’s Children and trying to figure out if I should get one of those HH stunty Land Raiders to paint purple and pink.
All hail the Primordial Annihilator!
