Warhammer 40K: What’s Going On With The Chaos Daemons

The Chaos Daemons are apparently leaving the Chaos Space Marine Codexes in Warhammer 40,000. This could get interesting.
Today, Games Workshop showed off how the Slaanesh Daemons are going to function in the Emperor’s Children Codex. They will included as an ally option via the Carnival of Excess Detachment. Not a big deal. But GW made a few changes and put them in the post. I think there’s some big implications moving forward.
First up, look at this list of Daemons the Emperor’s Children can take:
- Daemonettes
- Fiends
- Seekers
- The Keeper of Secrets
- Shalaxi Helbane
That’s a much smaller list from before. There’s no crazy Slaanesh Chariots, no Heralds of Slaanesh/Characters. The Masque is gone. It’s roughly half of the Slaanesh Daemons are not options for the Emperor’s Children to use.
Sure, maybe it’s not that big of a deal. You’re playing Emperor’s Children, not Slaanesh’s Daemons anyway. But look at this quote:
Better still, the new Codex: Emperor’s Children contains full datasheets for all of the daemons you’ll need: Daemonettes, Fiends, Seekers, the Keeper of Secrets and Shalaxi Helbane.*
* Expect to see the other Heretic Astartes Legions get the same treatment.
That means you can bet that the World Eaters, Thousand Sons, and Death Guard are all going to get many of their respective Daemon allies pulled from their codex, too.
Where Are The Chaos Daemons At?
Now, before you Daemon Players bust out the pitchforks, you can still use the Grotmas Detachments to run your respective Daemon armies. And the Chaos Daemon’s all have their datacards in the Chaos Daemon Index (for now).
That said, it does feel like this is a pulling back to a degree. Maybe it’s not a bad thing overall. Or maybe it will be once the dust settles. I’m curious what GW is doing with the Chaos Daemons in general. They were the one army that you could collect and play in both Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Plus, since everyone was on circle bases, I kind of figured that what GW wanted us to do. Especially if you didn’t want to commit to either system.
Regardless of what the future holds this is a reduced number of Slaanesh Daemons in the Emperor’s Children Codex. You can still take a good chunk of them — just not all the options. And, according to GW, you can expect the other Chaos Space Marine Cult Codexes to get the same treatment.
Maybe this is just a way to clean-up some of the rules…right?
