LEGO IDEAS: Build Favorite Blockbuster Movies – And A Place To Rent Them

Build some of the biggest titles of the ’80s and ’90s with these LEGO IDEAS movie sets, as well as a fully stocked Blockbuster – they just need your vote.
Blockbuster Video
Let the nostalgia flow. This brick-built Blockbuster features the famous sign above a large parking lot. When you take the roof off the store, you’ll find aisles of VHS tapes and treats to eat while you watch your rental. There’s also a check-out desk and an after-hours drop.
Nowadays, streaming services dominate the world of entertainment, where we can watch all the movies and series we love with one click, easy access, and speed. But it was not always this way. In the not-so-distant past, the only way to watch movies outside of TV and cinema was to go to a video store. [Blockbuster was] founded in 1985 in Dallas, USA, the company has been present in 26 countries with more than 4500 stores and has shaped the childhood and youth of many millennials like me.
…and me. With the store built, let’s pick some movies to rent, shall we?

Close Encounters
On the top of this week’s LEGO movie rental stack is an optimistic sci-fi story from legendary director Steven Spielberg. The mothership and Devil’s Tower are 15 inches tall and are created in micro-scale. Along with the massive alien ship it features the landing zone with the iconic lightboard.
The cast of minifigs includes Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), Jillian Guiler (Melinda Dillon), Claude Lacombe (François Truffaut), David Laughlin (Bob Balaban), and one of the aliens from the ship.
You’ll have to produce your own sound effects.

Rocky
Next up is a classic underdog story with one of the most memorable theme songs. This LEGO movie set has around 600 pieces and includes Creed, Rocky, and referee minifigs – with some room for more characters. It includes banners for each fighter. All the action happens inside of a boxing ring decorated with stars and surrounded with actual ropes. It even has a suspension system and a bell to mark the rounds.

Gremlins – Gizmo
A Gen X horror favorite is up next. Don’t feed this set after midnight. This mogwai is five inches tall and consists of 342 pieces, making it the perfect size to build while watching the movie. His head turns, and his arms move so you can pose him. The design does an amazing job at hiding studs, giving him a great cartoony look.

Short Circuit
Next on the stack is an exploration of consciousness disguised as a family movie. Johnny 5 rolled his way into the hearts of audiences back in 1986. Initially made as a weapon, a lightning strike changed his programming into a childlike robot with the need to explore and for endless amounts of input.
This LEGO movie set captures the robot from his fluttering metal eyelids to his tracks, and it has built-in articulation.

Hook
Not in the mood for a sci-fi or horror movie? How about some adventure? Build the dastardly pirate Hook’s ship, The Jolly Roger, with this set. It also includes the Crocodile Clock Tower, Nevertree, and the Lost Boy’s hangout, complete with tents, the dinner table, and Tinkerbell’s apartment. It has 4,955 pieces, making it great for the grown-ups who fell in love with this movie when they were kids.
Say it with me: BANGARANG!

Men in Black
Next in the stack is the only one in the franchise worth watching. Men in Black features a lot of weird aliens, including an Arquillian driving a human exoskeleton that allows him to hide on Earth. This build allows you to bring that to life. The old man’s head opens (his eyelids raise to show off his baby blues) to reveal the little green alien controlling it.
This is part of the 1990s challenge. Voting starts on this LEGO movie set tomorrow.

Independence Day
Ready for some galactic action? Will Smith fought against these ships while spouting one-liners like, “Now that’s what I call a close encounter.” This alien attacker set has 1000 pieces, has an opening hatch, and comes with an alien pilot ready to be punched.
This is part of the 1990s challenge; voting opens tomorrow.

The Mummy
Finally, the movie that awakened a bunch of folks’ sexuality while pushing movie CGI forward—The Mummy. This 2,106 piece set brings key elements in the movie into one build. The Book of the Dead opens to reveal the sandstorm form of the mummy chasing Rick O’Connell in a Bristol F.2 plane across the dunes. It also features seven minifigs.
