Welcome to the White Deer Inn: Critical Role is Running a ‘Suikoden’ One-Shot Next Week

The beloved JRPG series Suikoden gets a highly-anticipated remaster this week – and celebrates with a Critical Role one-shot next Tuesday!
Suikoden is one of those JRPGs that kind of flew under the radar for a bit. Sure, you had your Finals Fantasy 6 & 7 & Tactics. Or your Chrono Triggers and Radical Dreamers. But Suikoden carved out ground that continues to inspire both video game and tabletop RPG designers to this day. One of the big draws of the game was its large cast of recruitable characters.
Depending on how you played, you might end up with a whole crew of wayward soldiers, misfits, tinkerers, and weirdos back at your inn. Not to mention it’s extremely satisfying gameplay with the kind of crunch you can sink your teeth into. All without having to kill a deity or find the crystals of power, because the stories felt intensely personal and character-driven.
Little surprise, then, that Suikoden is one of the inspirations for many a dungeon master, including Matt Mercer of Critical Role, which I mention because Critical Role will be running a Suikoden one-shot next week, per a new announcement on social media.
Critical Role’s Suikoden One Shot Has a Cast That Will Make You Go “Hey! It’s That Guy!”
First the announcement:
“Adventure awaits at the White Deer Inn!
Game Master Matt Mercer leads Ashley Johnson, Taliesen Jaffe, Zeno Robinson, Arin Hanson, and Zachary Renauldo through the Muse City of Dunan in a special Suikoden inspired one-shot sponsored by Konamy next Tuesday, March 11th at 7pm PT!”
And what a cast. It evokes the feeling, “Hey, I know them” across the board. Ashley Johnson and Taliesen Jaffe you likely already know from Critical Role or a wealth of other places. But Zeno Robinson will be familiar to fans of My Hero Academia, Zachary Renauldo to people whose reels/shorts/feed is all things D&D, and Arin Hanson from Game Grumps—a whole other era of the internet that is somehow still going.
Wild times lie ahead. If this sounds like a game you won’t want to miss, don’t worry, you’ve got time. You can catch it streaming live on Tuesday, March 11th!
See you at the White Deer Inn!
