Age of Sigmar: The Upcoming Spearhead Boxes Are Looking Great

Games Workshop has four new Spearhead Boxes coming to Age of Sigmar and they all look like great entry points to Tabletop Wargaming!
You know with the new Trump Tariffs looming (a topic we already covered in more detail here), getting into Warhammer is going to get more expensive (at least here in the US). So getting new players in is going to be an even bigger challenge. Thankfully, Games Workshop seems to have a plan that they have been executing. That plan involves Spearhead, the smaller-yet-action-packed version of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar.
If you haven’t played any games of Spearhead you really should give it a go. The games are quicker, the armies are simplified-yet-engaging, and it really could be it’s own tournament format (but that’s another topic). It also helps that it’s a perfect entry point for new players or really anyone wanting to try out an army. And (relatively speaking) the Spearhead boxes and forces tend to be much cheaper than full armies.
New Spearhead Boxes
Announced at AdeptiCon, GW showed off four new Spearhead boxes coming soon. Today, we’re taking a quick look at each one.
Ogor Mawtribes – Scrapglutt
Contents:
- Gnoblar Scraplauncher
- 8 x Ironguts
- 12 x Gnoblars
- Mantrapper
While there is currently an existing Ogor Mawtribe Spearhead Box this one changes out basically all the units. That’s actually a nice feature because if you own it, this one doesn’t have any overlap. That means you could pick up the new box in addition to the current one and be well on your way to have an entire Ogor Mawtribes army beyond just Spearhead games.
Seraphon Spearhead – Sunblood Prowlers
Contents:
- 10x Saurus Warriors
- Spawn of Chotec
- 2 x 5 Hunters of Haunchi
- 3x Terrawings
This new Spearhead has more overlap than the current version but there are some very different unit options. I’m also not sure about the Saurus Oldblood and his two buddies as GW didn’t list them. However, I’m assuming they are there because, well, they are in the picture and that Oldblood looks to be the one leading the charge here.
Anyhow, this is another solid option for anyone looking to start a Saurus heavy Seraphon army.
Cities of Sigmar – Fusil-Platoon
Contents:
- Fusil-Major on Ogor Warhulk
- Alchemite Warforger
- 2 x 5 Freeguild Fusiliers
- Wildercorps Hunters
Yet again, this Spearhead is different than the existing one. And yet again, I think that’s a good thing. It’s a different aspect of the Cities of Sigmar army. While it’s more of an infantry heavy force this one brings the Freeguild Fusiliers to the fight and you get the great looking Fusil-Major on Ogor Warhulk miniature, too. It’s a really good companion to the existing Spearhead but it is kind of at odds with the Battleforce box (which is out of stock so probably isn’t really an issue).
Ossiarch Bonereapers – Mortisan Elite
Contents:
- 2x Morghast Arachi
- 3x Immortis Guard
- 3x Necropolis Stalkers
- Mortisan Ossifector
I’m assuming that list is the recommended army from this box because those Necropolis Stalkers/Immortis Guard can be built as the other unit pretty easy. Same with the Morghast as they can be either Arachi or Harbingers. But that’s not really the point. Overall, this is a beefy Spearhead force. It’s another good compliment to the existing Spearhead box. That one brings a lot of bodies while this one brings the heavy hitters. I’m personally a big fan of the Necropolis Stalker miniatures and have too many already. But I’m a fan of this Spearhead in general.
Spearhead: Sand & Bone
One more factor to consider for the future Spearhead games is the Sand & Bone Gaming Pack. It’s going to come with some new play boards to use for your Spearhead games as well as some terrain and missions. If you’re brand new to Spearhead I’d recommend getting this pack when it comes out.
Again, Spearhead is a great way to get into Age of Sigmar. It’s faster to build and play with than a traditional full army. And Spearhead games can be just as tactically engaging. Plus, it’s a great way to try out new armies in general.
What do you think of the upcoming Spearhead boxes?
