The long-awaited Baldur’s Gate 3, Patch 8 – the last major update to the game, with new subclasses and crossplay, launches Tax Day.

Larian Studios must want Americans to get their taxes done early. The dev team announced today that Patch 8, the final major update for the absolute masterpiece that is Baldur’s Gate 3, the update that adds crossplay and a dozen new subclasses, giving players whole new playstyles to explore and experiment with, comes out on April 15th.

This is also time enough to clear out your calendars, put in a time off request, etc., because now you’ll be able to play with your friends no matter the platform. I don’t know if that will hold to be true when smart devices become powerful enough that you can run Baldurs Gate 3 on your Refrigerator, but hopefully, by the time we get to Steam making their own gaming-capable appliances, we’ll have a new Larian joint to sink collective millennia into.

For now, there’s a release date. And the promise of more ways to be a Bard.

Baldur’s Gate 3, Patch 8 – The Final Big Update Comes April 15th

The announcement comes via official Baldur’s Gate 3 social media accounts, alongside the promise of an upcoming live stream to take people through all the new changes:

“Patch 8 will be ready to roll out on Tuesday, April 15th!

To celebrate, get ready to join us on Twitch where we’ll talk all things Patch 8 with guest developer Ross, whose work on the new subclasses will be arriving next week.”

The follow-up live stream will be the next day, April 16th, at 8 am CST. It will take players through the twelve new subclasses added in Patch 8, which, alongside Crossplay and Photo Mode, make this update one of the biggest to date. Here’s a brief reminder of what subclasses you can look forward to:

  • Barbarian: Path of the Giants – this subclass makes you Large, and in Baldur’s Gate 3, where strength, and especially the ability to Throw things makes a huge difference? This is going to be, for want of a better word, big
  • Cleric: Death Domain – with the new Toll the Dead cantrip and the promised ability to turn corpses into bombs (a new addition for BG3) this should be the explosive new subclass of your dreams
  • Druid: Circle of the Stars – Deal damage, heal, or give advantage to your friends with your Starry Forms, just like in the tabletop
  • Paladin: Oath of the Crown – wield the power of the law (for good or evil) and you can command your enemies, absorb damage, restore health, and more
  • Fighter: Arcane Archer – this was a disappointing class in the tabletop game, but I’m very excited to see Larian’s take on it
  • Monk: Drunken Master – similarly, Larian has done more for the Monk than a whole decade of 5th Edition ever has, and this will be a new use of all the alcohol bottles you continually find in barrels and crates
  • Ranger: Swarmkeeper – they can’t kill you if you’re covered in bees. Or jellyfish. Or moths.
  • Rogue: Swashbuckler – fancy footwork mixed with Larian’s appreciation for fighting options means you’ll have a potent new Rogue option
  • Sorcerer: Shadow Magic – embrace your inner darkness and unleash the Shadows in the form of a Hound of Ill Omen, Shadow Teleportation, and more
  • Warlock: Hexlade – Larian already kinda hexbladed their Warlock base class, so it’ll be real interesting to see how they do this one differently
  • Wizard: Bladesinging – yet another way to gish it up in BG 3

Get ready for a long update – this one is gonna be big!
