The SRD 5.2 is officially live, marking a free ruleset of D&D 5.5E available for all who want to use it under the CC-BY-4.0 license.

D&D’s new SRD 5.2 is live now. The official release marks the second major update to the SRD in the last few years (the first was the 5E SRD into Creative Commons). According to WotC, the update “builds on the foundation of SRD 5.1” which is a nice way of saying that the core rules now reflect the new edition.

To that end, you’ll find new spells, feats, monsters, and equipment available in the SRD. And as the game changes, so will the SRD—one of the big features WotC touts in the official press release is that “for the first time ever, the SRD will e part of the errata process”—which kinda feels like that should always have been the case.

At any rate, the SRD 5.2 is available to all. You can download it for yourself from D&D Beyond. We’ve got a look at what’s different in this SRD, and what made the cut to Creative Commons rules.

SRD 5.2 – D&D At Your Fingertips

This is the new official SRD for the 5.5E ruleset. The SRD 5.2 adds even more to the document than you might expect. Starting off with sections on the “Rhythm of Play” and “Exploration” to talk about running the game. And there’s a lot that gets added to the SRD from the new book, so it’s a bigger SRD than before.

Goliaths and Orcs make the jump to Creative Commons, while the Aasimar, for instance, don’t. Although, again, you can’t copyright rules mechanics, so it’s really just the name aasimar that I think WotC is protecting, from an IP perspective. Orcs are just out there in the common zeitgeist, and Goliath is a pretty broad word—it’s kinda the whole Space Marines vs. Adeptus Astartes deal.

Although weirdly enough, they did make a couple of name changes: the Deck of Many Things has been renamed the “Mysterious Deck” in the SRD 5.2. And the Orb of Dragonkind gets the name “Dragon Orb” instead. Whatever the reason, the SRD 5.2 has been updated with new stuff from the 5.5E core rulebooks, including magic items, environmental effects, and a ton of monster stat blocks.

Happy adventuring!
