GEEKERY: Voyages to the Final Frontier Continue
CBS has announced that Gene Roddenberry’s universe will return to your television in 2017!
When the last episode of the first series was cancelled due to low ratings in 1969 only the geeks understood its importance. The show was beyond its time in many aspects – from its storytelling to giving a progressive look at hot button issues. The Enterprise and its crew inspired twelve feature films and six television series (yes, the animated series counts) – and that’s just within the franchise.
This month CBS announced that a new series will start airing in 2017 – starting with a special preview episode – and will introduce new characters and worlds. It will be produced by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci.
“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.” – David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios
