Goatboy’s Model Review: Cypher & Voldus
Goatboy here doing another model review of the “extra” minis from the Primarch boxed set – Voldus & Cypher.
Goatboy here doing another model review. Today I will be going over the “extra” minis from the Primarch boxed set. We all know a lot of Marine players will want the main man himself so the two side characters are more like extra frosting on the cake. Still we did get a really awesomely updated Cypher and a GK character that will most likely be played as a regular GK librarian.
We’ll break each review into the Build, Paint, and Overall sections. The build is pretty obvious as I go into how hard it was, any weird things I saw, and hints on how to better complete this model. The paint delves into the painting thoughts and ideas on how best to get the model to the table top. Overall is more of a value thought on the model. Will start with the figure I like the most – Cypher.
Cypher
Build
As with any “clam pack” style characters – Cypher is a fully detailed, single posed, and a masterfully designed figure. He has a lot of under cuts and is really a great example of a figure that while being simple is still really astonishing to go together. There are a lot of “parts” that all slide perfectly in place as long as you clip off all the burrs and plastic channel bits. There wasn’t much to really clean either beyond those and he fits together in a way that you don’t really need instructions – just utilizing the picture of the main anti hero himself.
5 out of 5 – This guy went together like butter.
Paint
The biggest issue with him is there is a ton of detail underneath and around his cloak. The way the model fits together you want to built him first and thus you have to deal with trying to figure out ways to hit those underneath shapes. Of course you don’t really see them but it is still frustrating to try and get him fully painted up without hitting a part of his leg with some splotch of under cloak paint. Still overall his armor shapes and weapon shapes are both simple enough to easily follow the lines and different enough to make him look like an “old” marine. I kinda wish his other pistol was out and about as I thought a more John Wu style action pose would be fun to paint.
3.5 out of 5 – A lot of his armor is covered up so it gets hard to “detail” the heck out of him.
Overall
This is neat model to finally get a decent model for. This guy has been the anti hero we all have wanted more of and finally we have something neat to present on the table top. When I converted my own I went into a more Dark Angels style look instead of the “weird” mark armor look – but I prefer the new one. It just looks neat and really fits the overall theme of the renegade/bad guy/anti hero. They could have had him jumping around though for sure but without the weird ectoplasm or funky huge wings.
4 out of 5 – Are we ever fully satisfied?
Voldus
Build
Again just like Cypher this guy went together like a dream. Every bit and part just fit well together and once you got going it was pretty easy to have everything fit smoothly. The biggest issue was getting that head to look right as there is a bit of give to setting him up in halo of Grey Knight/Emperah!! nonsense. There was no complaints and he seems to fit well, posed decently, and looks cool when put together.
4.5 out of 5 – Its still just a cool Grey Knight Guy.
Paint
Voldus was a heck of a lot easier to get the details on then Cypher. Its like the director of this 40k movie told him to pose with his arms out wide. His chest parts are easy to get too, the storm bolter is completed shown, and even his cloak moves off to the side to allow more access to the back as well as underneath the cloak. This is how you do a cloaked figure and hopefully GW does it for any future releases.
4.5 out of 5 – Again it is just another terminator hero but at least he is super fancy.
Overall
This guy is pretty cool and as an “extra value” figure for a boxed set he is pretty neat. His rules are alright too – even though he is a bit too expensive. Still this isn’t a review on if he is useful this is just about the model themselves. I think he rocks, was fun to paint, and overall he is pretty bad ass as another signature Grey Knight Figure on the battle field.
4.5 out of 5 – I kinda wish they would redo Draigo too – even though he has high fives this guy as the new “future” of the Grey Knight leadership. Hooray Promotion – 1 extra week of vacation and your own personal bathroom.
~ I can’t wait for the next Triumvirate set of minis. What could they be?
