Farflung is here to blow your mind! Check out the new Sci-fi Role Playing Game from Sanguine Games.

Our friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy brought over a cool new Sci-fi RPG called Farflung. After a successful Kickstarter the book is on the way! Based on the popular Apocalypse World engine this game takes your adventures to the vast reaches of space – and beyond:

For those of you who love RPGs then what’s most exciting about this one is the setting. It’s like a mix of Hitchhikers Guide, Firefly, Fifth Element, Doctor Who, Lexx and… other weirdness. It’s really a giant sandbox of awesome to play around in. Games can take a trip from the absurd to the dramatic with a pit-stop at goofy or terrifying. Really, it’s up to the GM and the story they want to craft – and Farflung supports all of it. Space Travel, Time Travel, Space-Time Travel…well, you get the idea.

Farflung also has a different set of stats. Instead of your traditional Str/Con/Int/Dex/Wis/Cha you’ve got some new ones to learn:

  • Top – This is a measure of your “Extrovertedness”, how good you are at “Standing Out” and how display your emotions.
  • Bottom – This is your “Introvertedness”, your ability to blend in and go with the flow, and how you restrain your emotions.
  • Charm – This is basically your Charisma, how good you are at being likeable and convincing others to see things your way.
  • Strange – This is how good you are at “Freaking Other Out” and your ability to exude violence and danger.
  • Up – This is head knowledge. How good you are at deduction, using logic and math and also theoretical science.
  • Down – This is physical knowledge. How good you are at working with your hands, working with applied science and just being very hands-on with things.

I like how being good in one area doesn’t make you bad at another. For example, if you’re trying to convince an NPC to do a task, say drop a weapon pointed at you, the game basically has two stats that could apply to a “talk your way out of a fight” situation. You could go with Charm and try to use your innate likeablity to de-escalate the situation. Or if you more skilled in Strange, maybe you have such a menacing presence just shooting them a glare will be enough to shut them down.

Really though, Farflung is just a fantastic tool to add to the RPG toolchest. It’s another way for folks to get together and work at a cool story telling experience. It’s a big galaxy and you can do what you want! If that free-form story telling worries you or if you don’t know where to start, the book is PACKED with different character examples to get you on your way. Everyone will find the right “type” of character in that list.

Overall, Farflung is a pretty fun read. If you’re looking for a Sci-Fi RPG setting that is going to extend your boundaries for adventure then it doesn’t get much larger than the galaxy at large! So will you answer the call?

Farflung

We are pleased that you have come here. Let us tell you about your Farflung experience. It is a tabletop game about the ends of the universe, where nothing has been undone and everything is permitted. You will be one of the heroes who rages against the dying of the star-light. From transhuman zetta-tech androids, to the bewildered time-traveler who came to see new wonders, down to the humble robot who yearns for freedom, the only limits are your imagination.

In a future where everything is possible, then what makes for an interesting story? Farflung introduces you to a world of challenges from the simplest of tasks to the most complex of emotions. When space, time, death, life, hate, love, and everything else have passed beyond binary meaning, we will show you the many new stories that wait for you.

Based on the popular Apocalypse World engine, this high-concept science fiction game explores the possibilities of characters far, far more powerful than your typical role-playing game. From immortals beyond that transcend time, up to alien destroyers of entire worlds, and right down to the mostly-harmless Earthlings clearly in over their heads, you may immerse yourself in the experience of post-scarcity, transhuman space. But if anything is possible, then what is interesting? We have such sights to show you.

Pro Tip: If you get in a jam, and it’s raspberry, the answer is 42.
