40K: Chapter Approved Matched Play Updates
We knew the day would come – GW is previewing some of the Matched Play changes heading to a tabletop near you!
The Chapter Approved 2017 edition is coming soon and with it, perhaps one of the most anticipated features released: Re-visited Matched Play rules. We’ve got our wishlist but now we’re getting a direct preview from Games Workshop.
Chapter Approved is a particularly exciting opportunity, as it allows the Design Studio to rebalance the game on a yearly basis. This year’s Chapter Approved is, in short, an essential update for all matched play fans.
First, there are a few changes to the core rules of Warhammer 40,000 specific to matched play. We’ve previewed a couple of these, but to remind you: Boots on the Ground means that no Flyers can score points, while Troops in every army now have priority over other non-Troops units when scoring objectives.
These changes were instituted in the Errata/FAQ but now they are in print in the Chapter Approved. Not new, but definitely important to note.
Here’s a quick list of what else has been teased:
- Command re-rolls can no longer be used to affect Mission dice rolls.
- Understrength units can only be taken in Auxiliary Support Detachments.
- Rules on targeting characters have been slightly changed – this was to prevent: “shenanigans involving line of sight manipulation.”
- New points costs for “loads of units!”
Games Workshop noted some of the key units that are seeing point changes. The units who have been confirmed to increase in points are:
- Saint Celestine
- Belisarius Cawl
- Roboute Guilliman
- Malefic Lords
The units that have decreased in points are:
- Plague Marines
- Sicaran Venator
Also noted what this interesting graphic:
That looks to me like a Death Jester, a Gorkanaut and an Chaos Marine…
And based on that graphic I’d say those models are about to get cheaper in points…
If you didn’t catch it above, yes, Chapter Approved is also tweaking the points of the Imperial Armor indexes as well. We’re happy to see those books are getting a re-vamp in points as well.
Now, these are just previews of things to come – who knows what OTHER major changes are on the way. We’ll be all over these changes when they do drop – we want to know, too!
What do you think of these previewed changes so far? Which one are you most excited about?
