Geekery: Gary Oldman Plays a Sadistic A.I. in ‘Tau’
No, not that Tau. This new sci-fi horror flick from Netflix pits a streetwise woman against a very angry, demanding A.I. voiced by Gary Oldman. Based on this trailer we really need to have him voice Siri or Alexa as a tie in to the movie.
Director/writer Federico D’Alessandro has more experience in storyboarding than with leading a project. Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Game of Thrones) and Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest) head up the cast of humans. The official synopsis reads like one of those Facebook memes that asks you to describe something as obtusely as possible…
“A woman is held captive in a futuristic smart house and hopes to escape by breaking into the computer programs that control the house.”
Ok, then. It feels a bit like a Ex Machina – but not nearly as good – with some Saw mixed in. If you like C grade horror that has the potential of being so bad it’s good, this might be right up your alley. It looks like campy schlock with a heaping pile of mood lighting.
Netflix’s massive buy of original movies and series has brought viewers a mixed bag of things. Bright was very polarizing, Altered Carbon was lacking the depth some were looking for, and Mute was horrible; but we did get Lost in Space, Stranger Things, and Dark. It definitely seems, even after all of their years buying/creating exclusive and original content they’re still throwing random things at a wall and going with what sticks.
Tau arrives on Netflix June 29th – next Friday.
