L5R: ‘Children of the Empire’ Premium Expansion Announced
Fantasy Flight Games has just announced a new Premium Expansion for Legend of the Five Rings – Children of the Empire is going to expand the card pool and open up new strategies on your path for honor and glory!
A new Premium Expansion is coming to the land of Rokugan with Children of the Empire. Each clan is going to get access to a wealth of new cards and abilities. With 234 in the set, this is going to be a must buy for all Legend of the Five Rings players out there. There will be some new mechanics to master as well as new heroes to employ. Get ready for the next step in the story as well with this latest expansion from FFG.
New Mechanics To Experiment With
Children of the Empire places a heavy emphasis on honor—not just on the honor of your individual characters, but your clan as a whole. In the field of battle and in the courts, composure is key to victory.
Composure is a new mechanic introduced here, in Children of the Empire. So long as your honor bid is lower than an opponent’s, you are considered to have composure. While this does nothing on its own, every clan gains new cards with effects that only activate if you have achieved composure.
Maintaing Composure is going to be a tricky skill to master. But if you can do it, there are many cards that will be able to become even more powerful than they were solo. I’s a great way to control your own honor and it rewards smart play.
A New Challenger Has Appeared
Dueling is back in a big way for this expansion as well. Each clan is getting at least 1 more dedicated Duelist character to their respective tool boxes. Some characters will be designed to take on opponents in the realm of politics while others are dedicated to the military side of the house. But that’s not all – there will also be lots of new attachments that are going to boost characters beyond their cards alone.
The Epic Story Continues
The narrative of L5R is constantly shifting and changing based on the stories that are added and the results of major events. What better way to capture some of those epic moments that for cards to come out inspired by those same narrative elements?!
In Defense of Rokugan captures the moment of Hida Tomonatsu noble sacrifice in the story “Dark Hands of Heaven” by Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda. Not only does the card capture the concept of sacrifice one’s self for the good of the realm, the artwork showcases Tomonastsu’s last stand against the wicked obsidian-plated oni.
Subdue the Spirits showcases the story of the remote shrine of Sanpuku Seidō covered in Robert Denton III’s novella, The Sword and the Spirits. In this tale three unlikely allies had to team up to cleanse a shrine haunted by spirits from the realm of Slaughter. The art has all three characters present and it fittingly also grants an almost supernatural boost to a character in a conflict – as long as you’re more honorable than your opponent.
Neutral Heroes & More
The Champion of the Lion Clan, Akodo Toturi has become the right-hand of the Emperor. He has become a new Neutral Hero you can recruit to your cause. As long as you’ve got the Emperor’s favor he’s also incredibly powerful in challenges.
