RPG: Best RPGs Of 2018 – The Nominees
2018 was a big year for RPGs, here are some of the best ones we played over the last year.
2018 was a very good year for RPGs, with D&D rolling out no less than 4 new books and unveiling two settings, Pathfinder announcing an upgrade to 2nd Edition, Numenera seeing the release of its new, revised direction–it felt like a time of introspection and improvement. And there were several announcements that proved exciting as well: The Expanse was getting an RPG, the Witcher’s RPG is coming next year, and Wrath and Glory takes you to Elftown.
With all the hubub, it’s difficult to pick just five from the plethora of top-notch releases out there–but we narrowed it down to just the ones we had a chance to play. Plus, we’re on the internet, and deep magic set in stone before the dawn of time means that any list must be in multiples of 5, and any delinquency will be met with the full weight of Tim Berners-Lee’s wrathful glare, which is capable of cutting a man’s heart into little packets and sending it bouncing across multiple channels until it ends up in a warehouse in Scranton. So, not a law to be crossed lightly.
Wrath and Glory – Ulisses North America
Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage – Wizards of the Coast
Legend of the Five Rings – Fantasy Flight Games
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, 4th Edition – Cubicle 7
Numenera Discovery & Destiny – Monte Cook Games
Well that’s it for now. We’ll be back next week with the winners, but in the meantime, be sure and check back next week, assuming I haven’t been chased down by a Blade Runner (it is 2019 after all), and find out who won Best RPG Book 2018. Did we miss one of your favorites? Leave it in the comments below–we’d love to know.
